German derby
The German Derby is a horse race of group I . The performance comparison for three-year-old thoroughbred horses is held annually on the first or second Sunday of July on the Hamburg-Horn racecourse over a length of 2400 meters and is the most highly endowed German group race. Similar events are also held abroad.
history
After the North German Confederation had received a constitution in 1867 and the Hoppegarten racecourse was built near Berlin under the direction of the Union Club (named after the Union race, a performance test held since 1834 under classic conditions) and the Jockey Club Prize in Vienna since 1868 ( Austrian Derby) took place, the North German Derby was held for the first time in 1869 after a donation from the Prussian Landstallmeister Ernst von Schwichow in Hamburg - as a kind of social counterweight. The first winner was the investment horse owned by Ulrich von Oertzen .
Only a few times the German Derby (so called since 1889) was not run in Hamburg. This was in 1919 on the Grunewald racecourse near Berlin, in 1943 and 1944 in Hoppegarten (near Berlin), in 1946 in Munich and in 1947 in Cologne. Only in 1945 was the derby not run.
The derby was held from 1940 to 1944 as the “Grand German Prize for three-year-olds” and the Vienna Derby from 1940–1944 was run as the Grand Prix of Vienna. The derby returned to Hamburg in 1948 and the Grand German Prize for three-year-olds remained in the program of the Soviet occupation zone. This was later run as the derby of the German Democratic Republic.
Successful in the gallop derby
The most successful coach in the German derby was George Arnull (* Newmarket 1880, † Cologne 1960), a nephew of the two Hamburg club coaches William King Arnull and Ernest Nevill Arnull, whose grandfather Bill Arnull won the English derby three times as a jockey.
George Arnull achieved all derby victories as a private trainer in the service of Gestüt Schlenderhan , which was able to book its 18th success with Wiener Waltz in 2009 - 101 years after the first winner (1908 "Sieger"). In second place followed with twelve successes up to 1944 the state main stud Graditz .
The most successful jockey is Gerhard Streit with eight wins, followed by Otto Schmidt and the still active Andrasch Starke with seven wins. In fourth place is Tom Busby, who won the German Derby five times up to 1896, three times the Derby in Vienna and twice in Copenhagen.
Only three athletes have won the German Derby both as riders and as trainers. Hein Bollow , who was successful as a rider in 1953, 1954, 1956 and 1962, won the derby again in 1974 with Marduk as a trainer. Harro Remmert won the derby on Athenagoras in 1973 as a rider and in 1995 with All My Dreams as a trainer. In 1937 Ernst Florian Grabsch won with Abendfrieden as a trainer jockey for the Graditz Stud. A constellation that is no longer possible today. Either an active trainer or a rider, but no longer both in personal union.
Many great and successful riders simply lacked the necessary luck to ride a winner in the derby. These include Peter Remmert, Fritz Drechsler and the European record holder Peter Schiergen . As a trainer, Peter Schiergen has already saddled five derby winners: 2001 Boreal, 2006 Schiaparelli, 2008 Kamsin. 2013 Lucky Speed and 2015 Nutan.
The Derby is a classic race and is therefore only open to three-year-old stallions and mares. Geldings are excluded. Furthermore, the starters must be registered in a recognized stud book of the thoroughbred breed. Therefore, horses can only win the derby once, which does not prevent them from winning several different derbies. Before their victory in the German Derby, the following horses had already won the Derby in Vienna: 1883 Tartar, 1887 Zsupan, 1905 Patience, 1942 Ticino , 1943 Allgäu, 1944 Nordlicht, 1954 Kaliber and 1964 Zank. Birkhahn won the German Derby in Hamburg in 1948 and the three-year-old Grand Prix in Hoppegarten - the GDR derby.
So far, three coaches have succeeded in saddling the top three winners in the same German Derby:
- 1967 Sven von Mitzlaff with Luciano, Norfolk and Presto
- 1985 Heinz Jentzsch with Acatenango, Pontiac and Lirung
- 2000 Andreas Schütz with Samum, Subiaco and Acamani
- 2002 Andreas Schütz with Next Desert, Salve Regina and Tomori
So far there are five mares who are dams to two derby winners each:
- Cherry fly with caliber (1954) and kilometers (1956)
- Ordinale with Orofino (1981) and Ordos (1983)
- Laurea with Lando (1993) and Laroche (1994)
- Britannia with Borgia (1997) and Boreal (2001)
- Sacarina with Samum (2000) and Schiaparelli (2006)
- Wave game with gust of wind (2017) and world star (2018)
Samum and Schiaparelli (from Monsun from the Sacarina) are the only full brothers so far who have both won the German Derby.

- 2: 29.5 (57.79 km / h) 2010 Buzzword v. Pivotal - Bustling ( Danehill )
The so-called swamp derby of 1927 was by far the slowest derby in history with a time of 3: 03.2.

- ↑ In 1882 Trachenberg and the Austrian Derby winner Taurus , who had previously beaten his rival in the Union race, ran into the dead race. The owners of both horses then agreed on a run-off over 2600 m, which took place 90 minutes after the actual race over 2400 m. Trachenberg won the run-off with a 3 length lead. Trachenberg was a good sire and is still represented in the pedigree of many German thoroughbreds through his son Hannibal and daughter Cannae .
