Julius Rastenberger
Julius "Jule" Rastenberger (born January 17, 1887 in Berlin-Wedding , † July 3, 1943 in Hoppegarten ) was a German jockey in horse racing .
Life
Julius Rastenberger learned from 1903 to 1908 in Hoppegarten -Mönchsheim with trainer Albert Fritsche. He was active between 1908 and 1943 and won 1148 horse races during that time. He initially demonstrated his outstanding equestrian skills in obstacle sports, where he was also successful in the French stronghold of Auteuil before the First World War . Due to the outbreak of war, the number of foreign jockeys was reduced and so in 1915 Rastenberger was the first German jockey to win the jockey championship with 40 victories (however, he had to share the championship with the American George Archibald by the same number of wins).
He won his first derby in Austria in 1916. In the German Derby he was successful on June 27, 1920 with Herold and in 1934 with Athanasius . "Jule" was very popular with the audience thanks to his ability to use the possibilities of his horses optimally and carefully.
When the Grunewald racetrack opened in 1909 , he won the first race on the new track with “Autlerhorst” (owner J. Beutler).
Julius Rastenberger suffered a heartbeat at the age of 56 on July 3, 1943 in the “Auerswald race” in Hoppegarten on the mare Ovation , which grotesquely crossed the finish line with the second placed Landbote in a “dead race” and fell behind the finish line dead off the horse.
His grave is cared for in the Hoppegarten cemetery.
