Gerling Prize

The Gerling Prize is a German horse race for four-year-old and older racehorses. It is held on the Cologne-Weidenpesch racecourse over a distance of 2,400 meters and takes place every year at the end of April or beginning of May.

history

The race was founded in 1921 and was originally called the Birlinghoven Prize . The distance was modified frequently during the early years. The event got its current name in 1934 when Robert Gerling , founder of the insurance company Gerling , sponsor and thus namesake of the flat race.

The current distance of the Gerling Prize over 2,400 meters has been ridden since 1969. It had Group III racing status from 1972 to 1974 and again between 1984 and 1988 . In 1989 it rose to a Group II race . It is currently the oldest horse race in Germany that is continuously supported by a sponsor.

From 2019 the race will be called the Carl Jaspers Prize.
