Ralf Suerland

Ralf Suerland (born May 30, 1950 in Castrop-Rauxel ) is a trainer and jockey in horse racing .

Suerland won 707 races as a jockey in 23 years. His greatest successes were winning the German Derby in Hamburg in 1976 at Stuyvesant for Schlenderhan Stud and winning the European Prize with Ebano for Fährhof Stud in 1977, when he came down in a long Finish On My Way with Alfred Gibert in the saddle. For a few years Ralf Suerland was a stable jockey with the master trainer Heinz Jentzsch .

After his jockey career he became a coach. Until March 2007 he ran a racing team in Cologne and achieved 399 victories. After giving up on short notice, he returned a few months later as a coach, this time on an employee basis.

He celebrated his greatest successes as a coach with Proudwings and Martillo, both of whom belonged to the top European class on the mile.
