Born in Hungary, he emigrated to Germany in 1956 after the Hungarian uprising . His first engagement was with Count Janos Pejacsevich , who also emigrated after the Hungarian uprising and who was then training some of the horses at the Röttgen Stud . The first success in a major race in Germany came with the 'Mülheim Prize' at the Mülheim-Raffelberg racecourse. In June of the same year, Utrillo won the Austrian Derby for the Röttgen stud.
