Königsstuhl (* May 17, 1976 ; † 1995 ) was an English thoroughbred stallion who was bred by Genghis Khan from the royal coronation at the Bresges family's Zoppenbroich stud in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt.

ancestry

His dam line (Fam. 5-h) with the ancestral dam imperial dignity belongs to the very successful thoroughbred families in post-war Germany. From it come such good horses as Kronzeug, Kronenkranich, Kaiserstern, the European winner Kamiros, Katmai and among others the excellent mare Kandia. His father Genghis Khan was more of a mile horse and left only a few stayers among his offspring.

Racing career

Königsstuhl made 20 starts between the ages of two and five, won eleven races and finished second in seven races. The winnings totaled 1,028,125 DM (= approx. 522,093 €). The general counterbalance weight (GAG) was 73.5-103.5-102-105 kg.

Like all his talents, coach Sven von Mitzlaff Königsstuhl gave an unspectacular two-year season with only 2 races, of which he won the second in the winless class over 1,200 m.

Only when he started in the Prix Prince Rose in Ostend did he come home without money. He won the classic Henckel race (today Mehl-Mülhens-race - German 2000 Guineas ), the German Derby and the St. Leger in Dortmund, making him the only horse in the history of (west) German horse racing to have three times Crown is. In addition, he won the Aral Cup in Gelsenkirchen , the Grand Prix of Düsseldorf and internationally the Gran Premio di Milano in Milan, a highly endowed age comparison test in autumn.

In the Union race, the most important derby preliminary test, a judge’s verdict was corrected again for the first time in the history of German racing after its official confirmation. During the first evaluation of the target photograph, the target judge saw Königsstuhl in front of Nebos. Because of the previous hunting race, the mirror for the target photo had to be reassembled and a mistake was made with the alignment. When the finish photo was checked again, the finish judge corrected his decision and declared Nebos the winner in front of Königsstuhl. This was a highly controversial decision at the time.

His racing career and, above all, the three-year season was shaped by the conflict with his equally strong opponent Nebos , with whom he was involved three times in photo target decisions. The difference in performance between these two horses could hardly be objectified, according to the opinion of many experts their races against each other were decided mainly by the more experienced rider Peter Alafi compared to the young Lutz Mäder (on Nebos) .

Königsstuhl's racing career is inextricably linked with his trainer Sven von Mitzlaff. The grand master among the German trainers has prepared many first-class horses for the Zoppenbroich Stud and other owners, and with Königsstuhl as the winner of the triple crown, he has crowned his life's work. Since 1979 the Gallop Club Germany has chosen the Turf Personality of the Year every year. It honors people or groups who have made a special contribution to horse racing. The first recipient of this award was Sven von Mitzlaff as the first trainer in Germany to train a holder of the triple crown. And when the Königsstuhl was running, the crowds came to the racetrack. In 1979, Königsstuhl was voted Galopper of the Year .

Breeding career

After his racing career, Königsstuhl was set up in his home stud in Zoppenbroich in 1982. Königsstuhl's breeding career was just as successful as his racing career. He became champion father horse in Germany three times. In his first year (1983) he already won a Group I race with Helikon. He is the father of 15 horses that have been victorious or placed in classic races. Königsstuhl was particularly successful when he was paired with daughters of the top German sire Surumu . The derby winners Lavirco and Pik König emerged from such a connection and especially the monsoon that was bred at Stud Isarland in 1990 . This came into the possession of Georg Baron von Ulmann (Schlenderhan Stud) via the Baden autumn auction and was shaped into a first-class racing horse by the master trainer Heinz Jentzsch . While Monsun was somewhat overshadowed by Lando in his racing career , he is outstanding in breeding as the father of countless classic and Group 1 winners at home and abroad. His son Manduro (from the almond light) was the highest rated horse in the world in 2007. Since the days of the legendary Ticino, Monsun is the first German thoroughbred to gain real international attention. What seemed almost impossible 20 years ago is now a reality, namely that the largest international breeders, such as the ruling family of Dubai or the Coolmore Group, send their best mares to a German stallion for breeding. Königsstuhl's legacy is a major factor in the popularity of the German thoroughbred breed and a legacy that needs to be preserved.

Königsstuhl died in August 1995 as a result of colic.
