The Röttgen stud is a stud and horse racing stable in the Rath / Heumar district of Cologne . It has a size of 250 hectares, making it the largest German thoroughbred stud.

The stud takes its name from Röttgen Castle , which belonged to the stud for a long time. It was founded by Peter Paul Mülhens in 1924. It is part of the Röttgen agricultural and forestry operations. After Maria Mehl-Mülhens, the daughter of the founder, ran the stud and racing stable, after her death the stud was transferred to the Mehl-Mülhens Foundation she had founded. In her day there was Baronrath Stud, an Irish branch of the Röttgen Stud, from which Star Appeal emerged .

The stud farm is known for its thoroughbred breeding for the horse racing . As early as 1932, the stud with Palastpage was able to present its first derby winner . Uomo followed in 1959 . The most famous horse was the stallion Star Appeal, who won the Prix ​​de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1975 as the first and for a long time the only German horse . Other successful horses are Aspros, Lord Udo, Wauthi, Sternkönig and the winner of the Italian derby, Kallisto.
