Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is a gallop race over 2,400 m in Group I for three-year-old and older stallions and mares.
Alongside the Epsom Derby and the Kentucky Derby , the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one of the most prestigious international horse races in its category. Unofficially, it is considered the world championship in horse racing, although this title is now also claimed by other horse races ( Breeders' Cup ). The race has been held every year on the first Sunday in October since October 3, 1920 at the Longchamp racecourse in Paris in the Bois de Boulogne . The race was introduced to celebrate the end of the First World War .
The 1986 race is considered the "Arc of the Century" by European racing fans. In this race, the German horse Acatenango set the pace in the leading group for a long time, but had to bow to the overwhelming power of the competitors (including Dancing Brave, Bering, Sharastani, Shadari, Tryptich) in the home straight and took 7th place.
For a long time Star Appeal (by Appiani II out of Sterna by Neckar ) was the only German winner. In 1975 he won the "Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe" with a three-length lead as the greatest outsider to date (victory rate 1197: 10). Only in 2011 won another German horse with the mare Danedream (by Lomitas out of Danedrop). Overall, horses of German descent in the “Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe” have seldom been allied with luck. So they only get a few third ( Oleander , Tiger Hill , Borgia , It's Gino), fourth ( Lando , Shirocco , Getaway) or fifth places (Oleander, Sturmvogel, Nebos, Caitano, Tiger Hill). The Hurricane Run , bred from a Surumu daughter by the Ammerland Stud , won in 2005, but was sold to the Coolmore Syndicate a few months before the race. Finally, the mare Pfauenauge , bred by the Zoppenbroich stud in 1944, achieved third place under the name Madelon in 1947. Although she came from a mare acquired legally and for a high price from the Aga Khan in 1940 , she and her mother were confiscated after the war and transferred into French possession.
