Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby , also known as Run for the Roses , is a classic horse race for three-year-old thoroughbreds that has been held in Louisville , Kentucky since 1875 . It marks the start of the USA's Triple Crown , making it one of the most important thoroughbred races in the USA. It covers a distance of 1.25 miles (2,012 m). In 2019, it was endowed with three million US dollars, with a US $ 1,860,000 prize money.
Every year around 150,000 visitors come to the Group I race , which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May. The 104th edition in 1978 was accompanied by the documentary filmmaker Roland Klick and captured as Derby Fever on celluloid and awarded the Federal Film Prize. The popularity of the race has meanwhile mean that tickets have to be ordered at least a year in advance.
The participants in the Kentucky Derby have been determined using a newly introduced points system since 2013. The four best placed horses from 36 qualifying races receive points. The twenty horses with the most points in the end are eligible for the Kentucky Derby.
The first race was held on May 17, 1875. In 1892 the horse Azra won with the only 15-year-old jockey Alonzo Clayton, who is still the youngest winner of the Kentucky Derby to this day. The fastest time ran in 1973 by the stallion Secretariat with 1: 59.40 minutes. To date, he remains one of only three horses to finish the Kentucky Derby under two minutes.
Special
In 2020, the 146th Kentucky Derby could not be held on the first Saturday in May as usual. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic , it had to be postponed to September 5, 2020. This has not happened since World War II . On the scheduled race date, the American television station NBC broadcast a three-hour program with a virtual race, with the 13 previous Triple Crown winners at the start. "Bets" were accepted that were donated to Covid-19 sufferers. Secretariat won the 2020 virtual derby (7-2 favorite) ahead of Citation and Seattle Slew.
As part of her state visit to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first English colony in North America in Jamestown , the British Queen Elizabeth II visited the 133rd Kentucky Derby in 2007. According to her own account, this made her childhood dream come true. She was accompanied by her husband Prince Philip . She was following one of the most sensational races in the history of the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Calvin Borel and his horse Street Sense fell back to nineteenth and thus penultimate place at times during the race and still managed to be the first to cross the finish line with a sure margin.
Since 1939, mint juleps have been served in special derby mugs during the event . The classic cocktail with bourbon whiskey and mint, which the founder of horse racing, Meriwether Lewis Clark jun. , is said to have been fond, has long been considered the signature drink of the race. It is estimated that around 120,000 Kentucky Derby Mint Juleps are sold each year (as of 2015) during the two-day event.
qualification
Until 2013, the worldwide winnings in group races were used to qualify for the 20 starting places in the Kentucky Derby . Since 2013 there has been a points system, the Road to the Kentucky Derby . It includes several dozen races for 2- and 3-year-olds in which points are awarded.
A starting place has been reserved for the winner of Japan Road since 2017. There has been a European Road to the Kentucky Derby since 2018 . The remaining 18 starting places go to the top-placed riders in the Main Road to the Kentucky Derby , with the next horse moving up if a horse placed in front of it does not start. In the event of a tie, the winnings count. A mare must have the same qualification as a stallion, points from the qualification Road to the Kentucky Oaks and from other mare races cannot be transferred to the derby.
