# 9 - Top 100 US Racehorses of the 20th Century

Seattle Slew (born February 15, 1974 - May 7, 2002 ) was an American racehorse who won the Triple Crown for horse racing in 1977 , only the tenth horse to succeed. It was the only horse that achieved this goal undefeated.

ancestry

He was born on Ben Castleman's White Horse Acres Farm near Lexington. Father was Bold Reasoning, mother My Charmer. He was not expected to become a major racehorse. Its name came from the city of Seattle , where its owners, Karen and Mickey Taylor came from, and from the word Slough for a wind in the Pacific Ocean would be too difficult to remember, so the word slew was used.

Racing career

He started his career on September 20, 1976 in the Maiden Special Weight race over 1207 m, the fifth race in Belmont Park in New York. He was a big, strong, almost black two year old horse and almost unknown. His previous successful test races were not reflected in the odds, he was rated 10 to 1, and no one expected his victory. But the audience knew better, and when the bets were placed the odds were adjusted to 2 to 1. When the race started he was the favorite with 5 to 2. He showed the audience his "war dance", a kind of prancing that was typical of his behavior before the race. Then he won by five lengths.

He was named Horse of the Year in 1977 and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Breeding career

After his racing career, he dedicated himself to breeding at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky . In 1984 he was the leading sire (Leading Sire) in North America. That year his son Swale won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes , but died that same year.

Among his descendants were the talented but injury-prone Landaluce; Horse of the Year AP Indy, and the two-year-old Surfside champion, whose dam was Champion Flanders. Most of his genes were passed on through AP Indy, who also raised offspring in Kentucky. Horse of the year Mineshaft was one of his successful offspring, but not the only one. His daughters were also very successful in breeding. One gave birth to the thoroughbred Cigar, who has made the most money in horse racing so far.

Seattle Slew ranks ninth on Blood Horse Magazine's list of the Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century.
