Bold Ruler (born April 6, 1954 , † June 12, 1971 ) was a bay thoroughbred stallion . He ranks 19th on the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 US Racehorses of the 20th Century .
ancestry
He was born on Claiborne Farm near Paris , Kentucky in 1954. He was bred by the Wheatley Stable, the racing stable of Gladys Mills Phipps and her brother Ogden L. Bold Ruler's father was the stallion Nasrullah , his mother the mare Miss Disco .
Racing career
Bold Ruler's trainer was Jim Fitzsimmons and was mainly ridden by jockey Eddie Arcaro . In his career, Bold Ruler has been victorious in 33 starts 23 times and achieved a total of $ 764,204, which was unimaginable at the time. In 1957, after winning important races such as the Flamingo Stakes with a new course record and the famous Preakness Stakes , Bold Ruler was named Horse of the Year in the USA and also received the titles "3-year-old Champion" and "Champion of the Sprinter".
In a short season as a four-year-old he was still able to win the Stymie, Carter and Toboggan handicap.
Breeding career
Bold Ruler was used as a breeding stallion at Claiborne Farm and sired a total of 11 champions, including members of the US Racing Hall of Fame, Garnely and the legendary Secretariat . Between 1963 and 1969 Bold Ruler was the leading sire in the USA. In 1973 he became Leading Sire again, but could no longer experience this success. He died of cancer in July 1971 and was inducted into the US Racing Hall of Fame two years later.
Since 1976, the Bold Ruler Handicap has been held in his honor every year towards the end of October at the Aquaeduct Racecourse in Ozone Park , Queens , New York.
