Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 US Racehorses of the 20th Century
The Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 US Racehorses of the 20th Century is an often quoted and widely recognized listing of the most successful and best racehorses of the 20th century in the United States , which was published by the US American magazine The Blood-Horse for the millennium was issued. It was put together in a secret ballot by seven distinguished experts in the subject: Howard Battle, Lenny Hale, Jay Hovdey, William Nack, Pete Pedersen, Jennie Rees and Tommy Trotter. The list was also published as a book, expanded to include the biographies of the individual horses.
Immediately after the publication, Nack - editor at Sports Illustrated and author of a Secretariat biography - criticized the election process in relation to the daily newspaper Daily News , as a person from the Secretariat panel saw only in 14th place, which cost the horse the top spot in the end. Nacks comment:
- "That's an outrage. You mean this one person thought Secretariat would finish last in a 14-horse race? If I'd known somebody felt that way about Secretariat I'd have voted Man o 'War 15th. But how could I justify that? "
- "That's a scandal. So are we to assume that this one person believed Secretariat would be the last to finish a 14 horse race? If I had known someone thought that about Secretariat , I would have voted Man o 'War 15th. But how can I justify that? "
