Northern Dancer (born May 27, 1961 by Nearctic out of Natalma (by Native Dancer ), † November 16, 1990 ), breeder EP Taylor in Canada , was one of the best horse racing horses.

Racing career

Northern Dancer won 14 out of 18 races , including the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes , finishing second twice and third twice. In his first win he was ridden by Ron Turcotte, later his permanent jockey became Bill Hartack.

Breeding career

Following his racing career, he becomes one of the most sought-after stallions in thoroughbred breeding . He sired 146 race winners. His offspring - not only the sons and daughters, but also the following generations, such as the Dubai World Cup winner Curlin - distinguished themselves on the racetrack as in breeding , so that they repeatedly achieve top prices at auctions. He became champion of sire horses four times in England and Ireland. Northern Dancer is considered to be the most important sire of the 20th century in the English thoroughbred breed .

Three of his most successful sons - Lyphard, Nijinsky II , Nureyev - are named after dancers. Northern Dancer sons who are particularly successful in breeding are among others Sadlers' Wells - u. a. Father of Black Sam Bellamy, Galileo , High Chaparral, In The Wings, Islington, Montjeu, Old Vic, Salsabil - and Danzig, who u. a. Became the father of Danehill . But Vice Regent also ensures breeding successes through Deputy Mister.
