Curlin (born March 25, 2004 in Kentucky ) is an American thoroughbred horse . With a total of over US $ 10 million, it is the North American racehorse that has won the highest amount ever. His biggest victories include the Preakness Stakes 2007, the Breeders' Cup Classic 2007 and the Dubai World Cup 2008.

Curlin's father is Smart Strike , a half-brother of Dance Smartly , the 1991 Canadian Triple Crown winner. Curlin's mother is Sherriff's Deputy , daughter of Deputy Minister .

The foal was named after Charles Curlin, a black slave from western Kentucky who fought in the American Civil War. One of the foal's original owners, Shirley Cunningham, is Charles Curlin's great-great-granddaughter.

Timeform Publications, owned by Betfair , named Curlin the world's best horse on the dirt track in August 2008.

Success as a three-year-old

Curlin did not start when he was two years old. As a three year old, the chestnut was trained by Helen Pitts and in February 2007 won a seven furlong race for three year olds with a lead of 12 ¾ horse lengths in Gulfstream Park, Florida.

Curlin was 1: 1 favorite in the Belmont Stakes 2007. He delivered a long head-to-head race with the mare Rags to Riches and lost by a head length. Rags to Riches was the first mare to win the Belmont Stakes in a hundred years.

On October 27, 2007, Curlin started in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. The course was deep after several rainy days. In a field of nine horses, Curlin won over his competitor Hard Spun with 4¾ lengths. Curlin ran the 1 1/4 mile in 2: 00.59 which is a quick time on deep terrain. The track record is 2: 00.40 and comes from Carry Back from 1962.

In 2007 Curlin was named American Horse of the Year.

Success as a four year old

In 2008, Curlin started in Dubai at the Meydan Racecourse in the group I race Dubai World Cup, the most highly endowed horse race in the world. He had to work his way from the outside to the inside from start box 12 before he could leave the field behind on the straight. He won with 7 3/4 lengths. Curlin is the only horse in the history of the Dubai World Cup that managed to win the race from box 12.
