War Admiral (1934 - 1959) was an American thoroughbred racehorse. He was a son of the legendary racehorse Man o 'War and the uncle of the racehorse Seabiscuit , which was considered the most successful racehorse of its time.

Racing career

War Admiral won 21 of his 26 races. He was also the winner of the coveted Triple Crown in 1937, which earned him the title of Racehorse of the Year in the United States .

The spectacular 1938 race that he ran against the other famous racehorse of his day, Seabiscuit , is considered by some to be the best horse race in US sporting history. The four-year-old War Admiral, who had won some of the most famous races, was largely considered the favorite at the time, although the five-year-old stallion Seabiscuit had already won numerous victories and won more prize money. In the race, Seabiscuit led from the start; War Admiral was known for catching up with an opponent on the back straight. Seabiscuit slowed down the back straight, and War Admiral got faster and seemed to be overtaking Seabiscuit. But then Seabiscuit accelerated and finally won by three lengths.

1938 ran and won War Admiral yet another race that Rhode Iceland Handicap , at Narragansett Park in Pawtucket ( Rhode Iceland ). In February 1939, he won the first race he was registered for that year in Hialeah near Miami , Florida. After an ankle sprain, he was no longer used for racing.

Breeding career

War Admiral was a successful stallion and became the Leading Sire in North America in 1945 . By his death in 1959, 40 of his offspring had won stakes races , US races with entry fees .

Aftermath

In 1958, War Admiral was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs , New York , in the same year as Seabiscuit . When Blood-Horse magazine voted the 100 most important thoroughbreds of the 20th century , War Admiral was ranked 13th (Seabiscuit: 25th).
