Group race
Group races are weight races in horse racing , which are classified internationally. This makes it possible to compare the performance of horses internationally. There are races in groups I to III.
Group status
In group I are the most important races. The group status depends on the historical importance of the race, the amount of prize money and the performance of the participating horses in the last 5 years. The status of a race is checked regularly and is subject to change.
Weight compensation
The weight to be borne by the horse in the race results from its age and gender, in Group II and Group III races but also from its previous successes. In races in Group II and III, horses that have previously won a Group I race carry a higher weight, and sometimes Group I race winners are even excluded from Group III races. A horse that has won a Group I race in France , England or Ireland receives the same weight as a horse that has won a Group I race in Germany or Italy.
history
The system of group races was introduced in France, England, Ireland and Italy in 1972, with Germany added a year later. There are now group races around the world. A special feature of group races is that horses trained or drawn abroad may not be excluded from participation. Group races are therefore used to compare international performance. Germany
The most important and highly endowed German group race is the German Derby , which is traditionally held on the first Sunday in July at the Hamburg-Horn racetrack over the "classic Derby" distance of 2400 m (= approx. 1 1/2 English miles) . In 2007 it had a total funding of € 635,000 - € 381,000 of which went to the winner.
The Berlin Grand Prix has been held annually in July since 2010 on the Hoppegarten racecourse , a Group I race with a total endowment of € 175,000 in 2012.
At the end of July or beginning of August, the Bavarian breeding race , a Group I race over 2000 m , takes place on the Riem racecourse in Munich .
Every year in August is Dusseldorf-Grafenberg the Preis der Diana decided as a group I race, which is open only for mares.
The Grand Prix of Baden is next to the Derby the most important race in Germany. This is a Group I race over 2400 meters (for three-year-old and older horses), which is decided annually on the first Sunday in September at the Iffezheim racecourse near Baden-Baden .
Also in September in Cologne-Weidenpesch the prize of Europe over 2400 m takes place.
A second Group I race has been running in Munich since 2012 : the Bavarian Grand Prix in November. Previously, this was run under the name Rhineland-Pokal next to the European Prize in Cologne.
