Price of Diana
The Diana Prize , also known as “Stutenderby” or “German Oaks”, is a traditional horse race that has been held in Düsseldorf since 1857 , to which only three-year-old mares of the English thoroughbred breed are allowed. In 2015 the Diana Prize was endowed with a sum of € 500,000.
history
Until 1867 the race was held in Berlin-Tempelhof , from 1868 to 1917 in Hoppegarten , from 1918 to 1922 in Berlin-Grunewald and then again from 1923 to 1944 in Hoppegarten. The race was canceled in 1945 and 1946 due to the war. In 1947 the race was held for the first time in Düsseldorf. It then took place in Mülheim an der Ruhr from 1948 to 2003, before returning to Düsseldorf after two years in Hamburg, where it is generously sponsored by the local consumer goods manufacturer Henkel . With a total endowment of € 400,000, it is the second highest endowed horse race in Germany after the German Derby . Since 2001 it has been classified in the highest international racing category Group I, before that it had Group II status. Until 1972 it was over 2000 meters, from 1973 to 1976 over 2100 meters and since 1977 over 2200 meters. With the "Oaks Stakes" in England and Ireland, the "Prix de Diane" in France and the "Oaks d'Italia" in Italy, there are similar competitions in the other classic horse-racing countries, which differ only slightly in terms of the distance run.
Double winners
Nereide was the first mare to win the Derby as well as the Diana Prize. She won both races in record time, but while her derby record would last 57 years, the equally legendary Schwarzgold undercut Nereide's Diana record by 0.6 seconds just four years later. Both times are the fastest ever run in the long Hoppegarten era of the race. The third double winner, Asterblüte , succeeded in 1949, together with the mare Aubergine, who also came from the Schlenderhan Stud , in the unique feat of winning all 5 classic races in one year. In addition, Aubergine took second place in the derby. The Ticino daughter, Funny, was the fourth and, for the time being, last double winner in 1955. Borgia won the Derby in 1997, but was only second in the Diana race 1.5 lengths behind. Even before Nereide, two mares came very close to the coveted double. Nuage's best daughter, Alpenrose , won the Diana Prize in 1922 and was only beaten for a head in the derby. In 1927, Libertas , the first important horse of the Erlenhof stud and bred by the same father as Nereide, failed even more closely and, above all, very unhappily . In the so-called swamp derby, she had to start in a puddle of water and fell at the start. With a gaping flesh wound and a large residue, she took up the pursuit of the field and came up to the tip of the nose to the victor Mah Jong. Libertas also lost over 10 lengths at the start of the Diana Prize, but was still able to win. The main reason for the low number of double winners was that the entries for the Derby and the Diana Prize had to be submitted very early and the very costly possibility of naming a horse for these races has only been available for a few years. For this reason, z. B. the famous Herold daughter Sichel , who dominated her year at will, was denied a start at the derby.
Successful father horses
Nuage , imported from France by the Graditz stud farm, is by far the most successful sire horse at the Diana Prize. A total of 6 of his daughters won the race from 1916 to 1926. There were also numerous placements among the top three. In 1921 and 1926 his daughters even scored two double victories. The only triple victory in the history of the race was achieved in 1910 by the daughters of the English derby winner Ard Patrick, who was also imported by Graditz . With three successful daughters each, Paragone , Cambuscan , Herold , Fervor , Magnat and Ticino are jointly second in the ranking of sire horses. Ticino also had a daughter who was successful with the English Oaks. The most successful German stallion of the last few decades, Monsun , has so far not only had two German stallions but also one winner each in France and Italy.
161st Diana Prize 2019
The 161st Diana Prize 2019 took place on the Düsseldorf-Grafenberg racecourse. It was won by the mare Diamanta (Maxios - diamond goddess), trained by Markus Klug for the Brümmerhof stud, ahead of Naida and Durance .
