Ulrich von Oertzen

Ulrich von Oertzen (born December 6, 1840 in Barsdorf , † February 23, 1923 in Rostock ; full name: Ulrich August Wilhelm von Oertzen ) was a German landowner, district administrator and member of the Reichstag. He was of outstanding importance for the further development of horse racing and thoroughbred breeding in the German Empire .

Life

Ulrich von Oertzen was the seventh of nine children of the Mecklenburg landowner and head captain of Lübbersdorf , Wilhelm von Oertzen (1803-1889), and his wife Auguste nee. Born by Balthasar (1809–1879). He attended grammar school in Neubrandenburg , passed his Abitur in autumn 1859 and began studying law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in the same year . In 1860 he became active in the Corps Borussia Bonn . As an inactive he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin .

His horse Investment was the first ever winner of the North German Derby (today: German Derby ) in 1869 . In 1872 he won the derby a second time with Hymenaeus . He won the Diana Prize three times with Caro Dame (1870), Zwietracht (1873) and Lore (1901). He was also a co-founder and for 30 years a member of the Technical Commission of the Berlin Union Club , of which he was also a member. He had set up a stud on his estate in Remlin . With the stallion Hannibal he bred himself , winner of the German St. Leger and the Berlin Grand Prix , he had a lasting influence on the German thoroughbred breeding. Hannibal was a stallion at the Graditz main stud for a long time .

In 1866/67 he became an officer in the Body Guard Hussar Regiment . He fought in the German War and the Franco-German War and retired as a major. He became a government assessor in 1873 and was district administrator in the Jüterbog district from 1876 to 1890 . After that, from 1893, he was senior government councilor in Hannover for three and a half years . He represented the Jüterbog-Luckenwalde district in the Prussian House of Representatives from 1879 to 1890 and from 1908 to 1918. He was also a member of the Mecklenburg state parliament.

As a member of the German Reich Party , he sat in the Reichstag (German Empire) from 1903 for the constituency of Potsdam 9 district ( Zauch-Belzig , Jüterbog-Luckenwalde ) . His mandate was declared invalid on April 3, 1913.

Oertzenweg in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf has been named after him since May 11, 1938 .
