Schwarzgold (* 1937, † 1950) was a racehorse of the English Thoroughbred breed . The mare was bred at the Schlenderhan Stud . Black Gold was a Dark Ronald - inbreeding . Both her father, an alchemist, and her mother's father, Schwarzliesel , Oleander , were grandsons of Dark Ronald in a direct paternal line.

Racing career

Schwarzgold's racing record is:

  • 2- to 3-year-olds 12 starts - 9 wins - 2 second places
  • Prize money: 182,900 Reichsmarks

She lost in her annual debuts (two-year-old against Truxa , three-year-old against Newa in the classic Henckel race - today Mehl-Mülhens race - German 2000 Guineas - when she was completely out of place for the only time) and again for two years in the Ratibor race. But she designed all of her victories in a superior manner - and thus established her reputation as a wonder mare and galloping machine . After the surprising defeat in the Henckel race, she was always led to the starting point because it was difficult to stop when she galloped up before the race when she entered the racetrack.

As a three-year-old she won the classic Kisasszony race , which was named after her black gold race for many years from the following year , with 6 lengths, the Diana with Weile Prize (more than 10 lengths), the German Derby with 10 lengths, the Oleander races with a while , and the Grand Prix of the Reich capital again with a while . Although she did not win the derby in record time, she needed over 2,400 m less than twice as long as the winner of a good race over 1,200 m - also a unique event on German horse racing tracks. Before the Grand Prix of the capital, the appropriate goal judge at the High Authority had requested (for racing) special permission, possibly deviating the judgment of the racing order behave to announce what he could actually do, as black gold almost in step, but crossed the finish line well before the competitors.

Due to the war, like Ticino, it could not be tested internationally, especially since the SS prevented it from starting in the Brown Belt with armed force - a unique occurrence in German racing history. Nevertheless, she received a GAG (general balance weight) of 113.5 kg - the highest that has ever been awarded in Germany. The war also prevented a start in the famous Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe , on the French parade track in Paris Longchamp.

Her trainer George Arnull , in his own words, " loved the old man (meaning oleander ) too much" to classify him as black gold, but indirectly admitted that black gold was probably the better horse after all.

Breeding career

Schwarzgold's breeding career was initially disappointing, she had to be killed at the age of 13 due to an incurable disease and until then had only given birth to two daughters. Today she is considered the founder of the Schwarzgold family , but in fact all descendants living today descend from her daughter Schwarzbluurot , so that she is to be regarded as the actual founder of the family . Black- blue-red (born 1947) was one of the good mares of the year with a third place in the winter favorite and a second place in the German mare price . But she was a long way from her mother's class. On the other hand, one could also name Schwarzgold's grandmother Schwarze Kutte as the actual founder of the family, because with Schwarzdrossel she brought another mare, whose offspring in Germany today produce good to very good racehorses.

This family flourished in the mid-1960s when Schönbrunn won both classic mares races in Germany and was successful in other races in France. In the possession of the Parisian art dealer Daniel Wildenstein, she became the mother of Sagace , a winner in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and several other Group 1 races. Sayonara , another great-granddaughter of Schwarzgold, was owned by Lord Howard de Walden, mother of Slip Anchor , who won the English Derby in 1985 in the style of his ancestor from start to finish, leading and completely superior with seven lengths (against Law Society , who later Breeding stallion at Stud Isarland near Munich).

Today the descendants of the Schwarzgold are spread all over the world and make great winners in almost every country in which horse racing is practiced. For example Manhattan Cafe and Biwa Heidi in Japan, Zagreb as Americans with a win in the Irish Derby, English- bred Steinlen with a win in the Arlington Million from Chicago, Upsetthym in Australia etc. In Germany the family is still in the home stud of Schwarzgold , the Schlenderhan Stud. Via Saite (1978 by Marduk ) another branch is very successfully active in the Westphalian stud Wittekindshof.

In 2009 the descendants of Schwarzgold celebrated great successes again. In Japan, Buena Vista, a great-granddaughter of Santa Luciana, won the two Japanese mare classics, and in France, Stacelita, a daughter of Soignee, won the Prix de Diane, the French Oaks. This was the first time that a descendant of Monsun won a classic race in the neighboring country. Both horses go back to black gold in the mare line.
