Borgia (* 1994 ; † end of March 2012 ) was an English thoroughbred horse that won the German Derby in 1997 and the Hong Kong Vase in 1999.

ancestry

Borgia was so far the only German-bred horse racing horse whose parents both took part in the world's most important race, the " Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe ". Her father Acatenango was seventh in 1986, her mother Britannia ninth in 1989.

Racing career

She was the second and so far last mare to win the "German Derby" in Hamburg- Horn after the Second World War . This derby victory also played a key role in her election to Galopper of the Year 1997. Borgia then showed that this derby victory was no coincidence on the international stage by winning the "Grand Prix of Baden". In addition, she increased the results of her two parents by taking third place in the "Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe". At the age of four and five, she achieved further top placings in group races in France, the USA and Asia. At the end of her racing career, which is unusually long and exhausting for a top German mare, she won the "Hong Kong Vase" (Group I).

Borgia was trained by Bruno Schütz in Cologne at the age of two and three , then for a short time by his son Andreas, but switched to André Fabre in Paris during her four-year season .

Breeding career

After her racing career, she went to the breeding of her owner, Gestüt Ammerland , in 2000 . She was repeatedly mated to the European top sire Sadler's Wells , but her offspring could not build on her great successes. Her best offspring is probably her son Bermuda Reef , born in 2010 , who won a list and a Group III victory over 2000 m in 2014. Her daughter Born Wild , who showed only modest performances on the racetrack, turned out to be a pearl in breeding.

At the end of March 2012, at the age of 18, Borgia was put to sleep due to severe colic. Her last foal was raised by a nurse mare after her death .
