Lester Keith Piggott (born November 5, 1935 in Wantage ) is a former British jockey and horse trainer . He is the most successful European jockey of all time.

youth

His grandfather Ernie Piggott was already active in horse racing and won the Grand National in 1912, 1918 and 1919. His father Keith was the British obstacle racing champion as the trainer in the 1962/63 season. His mother Iris also came from a family of jockey. Lester Piggott won his first race in 1948 at the age of 12. With a height of 1.73 m Piggott was unusually tall for a jockey and he therefore earned the nickname "The Long Fellow".

Career as a jockey

At 18 he won his first British derby win in 1954. With 8 more victories he became the record holder in this race. Overall he was 11 times the most successful jockey of the year in England. From 1955 to 1985 he achieved over 100 victories a year in 25 years. He was also in great demand internationally and won in 27 different countries, including three wins each in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and in the German Derby .

Interlude as a coach

In 1985 he ended his jockey career and became a successful coach. His career bottomed out in 1987 when he was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion. Because of this scandal, the title of OBE , which had been awarded to him in 1975, was revoked in 1988 .

Continued career as a jockey

After his early release in the same year he resumed his jockey career and won the important Breeders' Cup Mile in the USA just 10 days later. With the English 2000 Guineas he won another great classic in 1992. In 1995 he finally said goodbye to racing.

Lester Piggot in Germany

In Germany, Lester Piggott's name is mainly associated with that of the famous Erlenhofer Orsini . This actually lacked the stamina to the derby against a brilliant stayer as porch , the best son of the legendary Waldrun to exist. Orsini had no chance against Windfang under Fritz Drechsler in the 200 m shorter Union race . The Erlenhof coach Adrian von Borcke then hired the only 21-year-old Lester Piggott for the 1957 derby. Although Windfang was by no means in a bad mood on the derby day and impressively demonstrated his class on the Horner home straight, Piggott was able to join his Orsini thanks to a brilliantly divided race ensure victory by a narrow neck. Lester Piggott could not have celebrated a better debut in Germany.

From then on, German owners and trainers stood in line to offer him their best horses for the derby. In 1968, Lester Piggott again seemed to have the best cards for the derby with the man of letters . On the home stretch, however, the couple's way forward was blocked and Lester Piggott tried to stamp out a writer. This suffered an injury. Instead of finishing the race, Piggott drove the horse to the finish line with no chance. Literat's racing career came to an end and the famous sire line of Dark Ronald almost went under because of his meager racing record, because of his meager racing record, Literat was not well received by German breeders. Literats owner Walther J. Jacobs , for whom it would have been the first Derby win, and his trainer Sven von Mitzlaff blamed Piggott for the fiasco. Although there are still rumors about a conspiracy of the German jockeys against Piggott in this race, his nimbus in Germany was broken and he should never win the German Derby again.

At the end of his career, Lester Piggott wrote in a German publication that Orsini, whom he accompanied on all his missions around the world, was the best horse of his career alongside Nijinski and Sir Ivor .

successes

Lester Piggott won 59 classic races in Europe. 7 times the 1000 Guineas, 8 times the 2000 Guineas, 20 times the Derby (including 3 times in Germany), 13 times the Oaks and 11 times the St. Leger. The next in the “all-time leaderboard” is William Carson, who won a total of 38 classic races.
