British Champions Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The British Champions Day is a day of racing for whole blood - horse racing in the UK .

history

It is the climax of the British Champions Series , with the finals of all five departments and another Group I race being held. Over four million pounds of prize money will be distributed on British Champions Day. This makes it the most highly endowed British racing day.

British Champions Day has been held every October since 2011 at Ascot Racecourse in Ascot , Berkshire , south of Windsor . The event competes with the French Arc de Triomphe weekend and the Breeders' Cup for the best horses at the end of the season. It marks the end of the season for the British flat races.

British Champions' Day emerged from several historic races that had been held at Ascot and Newmarket at the end of the season for many years . The Diadem Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes were held at Ascot, and the Champion Stakes , Jockey Club Cup and Pride Stakes were held in Newmarket. In the new framework, these races then became the finals of the British Champions Series.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Champion Stakes kept their names and became the finals of the mile and middle distance. The Diadem Stakes became the British Champions Sprint, the Jockey Club Cup became the British Champions Long Distance Cup, and the Pride Stakes became the British Champions Fillies 'and Mares' Stakes.

On British Champions' Day in Ascot in 1996, jockey Lanfranco (" Frankie ") Dettori won all seven races. This race day, September 28, 1996, is considered to be the most loss-making (around £ 30 million) for bookmakers in English racing history.

The undefeated Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2011 and the last race of his career the following year, the Champion Stakes. The 2012 Champions Day Meeting achieved a record attendance with 32,000 spectators.
