Sirocco ( Thoroughbred horse ; born 10 April 2001) is one of the most successful racehorses of the German Gallop Sports .

Shirocco was a son of the champion sire Monsun . He was the fifth foal of the mare So Sedulous , a daughter of the Northern Dancer son The Minstrel , who triumphed in the English and Irish Derby in 1977 .

In his first year as a racehorse (2004), Shirocco earned 568,000 euros. Among the victories of the brown stallion was the 135th German Derby in Hamburg-Horn .

Another career highlight followed in 2005. Shirocco won the Breeders' Cup Turf, endowed with two million US dollars, at the Belmont Park racecourse in New York, marking the greatest success of a German horse in ten years. He had previously achieved fourth place at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris- Longchamp . Due to an injury, Shirocco was only able to compete in three races in 2005, but won almost a million euros. In January 2006 his election for " Galopper of the Year " 2005 was announced.

Since August 2005, Shirocco has been in the care of the most successful European horse trainer, the French subscription champion André Fabre , in Chantilly near Paris . In his career spanning three racing seasons, Shirocco earned a total of 1,915,488 euros in 11 races (6 wins, 5 places). Its breeder and owner is the Cologne banker Georg Baron von Ullmann.

Shirocco started as one of the favorites in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2006, but disappointed across the board and came last. A subsequent start in the Breeders' Cup Classic was no longer realized. Georg Baron von Ullmann sold Shirocco to one of the world's largest breeders and owners, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum. In its Dalham Stud sirocco is from the 2007 season to a stud fee of 10,000 pounds sterling set up as a breeding stallion.
