Samum (* March 21, 1997 ; † March 13, 2018 ) was an English thoroughbred horse that was bred from the Sacarina by Monsun at Gestüt Karlshof . The chestnut stallion was voted Galopper of the Year in Germany in 2000.
ancestry
Samum comes from one of the currently most important thoroughbred families in Germany. His father is the exceptional peeler Monsun (from Königsstuhl ), who was active in the Schlenderhan stud . Samum's mother Sacarina (by Old Vic) is an unchecked imported thoroughbred mare who was named broodmare of the year in Germany in 2002.
Salve Regina (96 GAG, winner of the Diana Prize and second in the German Derby), Schaljapin (died), Sahel (owned by the Wertheimer family), Schiaparelli (98.5 GAG, also Derby winner, sold ) from the connection Monsun - Sacarina to Darley) and Sortita (sold to England, runs there in the colors of Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum).
Racing performance
Race record:
- 2- to 5-year-olds: 14 starts - 6 wins - 3 places
- Total prize money: 980,891 euros
- General counterbalance weight (GAG): 86.5 - 102.0 - 98.5 - 95.0 kg
As a two-year-old Samum won both of his starts easily. He was able to continue this winning streak in the following year. The start of the year at the Dr. Busch Memorial (Group III) in Krefeld on a difficult track led to success. The next start one step higher in the Müller Bread Prize (Group II) in Munich was a demonstration of his skills, with four lengths he distanced the rest of the field. This performance brought him the favorite position in the German Derby in Hamburg-Horn, which he was able to finish with a legendary performance. With "One explosion, one explosion", racing commentator Manfred Chapman created a new catchphrase. The following start in Iffezheim, in the 128th Grand Prix of Baden, at that time still run as part of the World Racing Series, which is now discontinued, should be the last victory for Samum. In this Group I race, he beat international greats like Daliapour, Mutafaweq and Fruits of Love, as well as the Gerling Prize winner Catella. The subsequent starts abroad, especially the start in the Hong Kong Cup (December 2000), then seem to have cost substance, because at the age of four Samum was only a shadow of himself and remained well below the performance he had shown in the previous year. Even when he tried to make a comeback as a five-year-old, the Monsun son was unable to build on previous performances.
Breeding career
Following his racing career, Samum was set up as a stallion in his home stud, the Karlshof. In his first year Samum had a Group II winner with Scatina , who can also be noted as his first winner. Scatina was sold at the Tattersalls December Sales 2007 on December 4, 2007 for 330,000 guineas . Another daughter, Sworn Mum, was able to achieve Blacktype in a list race in France when she last started. Kamsin (ad Kapitol) comes from his second year and was narrowly beaten on his debut, but then won the German Derby 2008 on suitably heavy ground (trained by Peter Schiergen and ridden by Andrasch Starke). Other important offspring were the Group I winner Baila me , Durban Thunder , Be Fabolous and the Derby runner-up Sordino . In 2008 he won the championship for sire horses in Germany . Samum surprisingly died of a thrombosis on March 13, 2018 .
