Albert Darboven (born as Albert Hopusch , also called Atti or Addi , born April 15, 1936 in Darmstadt ) is a German entrepreneur . He is u. a. Managing owner of the coffee trading company J.J.Darboven GmbH & Co. KG .

Life

The son of the same name, born in Darmstadt in 1936, of the surgeon Albert Hopusch († 1948) and his wife Johanna Margarethe, b. Wagner had a sister, Marie-Luise, born in 1937. He started school in 1942; After completing secondary school at Louisenlund boarding school , he completed an apprenticeship as a foreign trade clerk with the Hamburg coffee importer Bernhard Rothfos .

In 1953 he was Arthur Darboven and his wife Anna-Maria, who were childless by his great-uncle, adopted so that he could lead their family name and enter the succession of the family business. 1954 followed three more years of apprenticeship as a buyer on coffee plantations in El Salvador , Nicaragua and Costa Rica . There he met his first wife, Inés Alicia de Sola Oppenheimer, the daughter of a Central American industrial family, with whom he has their son Arthur Ernesto .

In 1966 Darboven joined JJ Darboven's management team together with his cousin Herbert . He has been married to his second wife Edda, née Princess von Anhalt , since 1973 . The couple's intention, by adopting Darboven's sports and business friend Andreas Jacobs , to prevent both their son and nephews from continuing the family business and to exclude them from legal succession was seen as an escalation of a prolonged family dispute.

Equestrian sport

Darboven was an active polo player until 2003, and since 1970 he has been breeding English thoroughbreds in his own Idea stud . His greatest success was winning the 1992 German Derby with the Königsstuhl son Pik König . When no other sponsor was found in 2009 and this most important German horse race threatened to be lost for the city of Hamburg, Darboven stepped in as financier. In 2010, 2011 and 2014 he had to repeat this costly rescue operation. In 2016 Albert Darboven was awarded the HansePferd Memorial Prize.

Engagements

Albert Darboven is also involved on a voluntary basis for Hamburg. The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) sponsored the Brooksbrücke , the former main bridge to the Speicherstadt . The sculpture portals, which were destroyed in the Second World War , were redesigned under the patronage of Ole von Beust between 2001 and 2006 by the sculptor Jörg Plickat in coordination with the Hamburg Monument Protection Agency and financed by Darboven.

In 1997 he donated the idea award , endowed with 65,000 euros , which is intended to help young women entrepreneurs to realize their business ideas.

Trivia

The figure of Mr. Radioven embodied by Andreas Liebold in the comedy radio show Frühstyxradio is a parody of Albert Darboven.
