history

Glengarry County was settled by families from Glengarry in the Scottish Highlands after the American War of Independence . The men had fought on the Royal British side in the war. In 1804, the Catholic priest Alexander Macdonell came from Scotland with other "Glengarries" and settled at Saint Raphael’s in South Glengarry . On the river Garry (named after the river of the same name in Scotland) he built a water mill and a dam for the water supply in 1819 . The mill was called Priest's Mill by the people . In the following years a settlement developed around the mill. It was named Alexandria in honor of the founder, who became the first Bishop of Kingston in 1826 .

Alexandria has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall since 1890 . Episcopal Church is St Finnan's Cathedral . In 1903 the settlement was elevated to a town.

On January 1, 1998, the former parishes of Kenyon, Lochiel and Maxville were combined with Alexandria to form the new parish of North Glengarry.
