Trabrennbahn Mönchengladbach

The Mönchengladbach trotting track is the oldest trotting track in Germany. It is located near Mönchengladbach Airport in the Flughafen district . After several name changes and the founding of new clubs, the "Association for the Promotion of Rheinische Trabrennsportes eV" has been the organizer of the racing business since 2008. Race days usually take place once or twice a month.

history

The "Association for the Promotion of Trotter Breeding of the Niers -Nordkanal-District" was founded as early as 1892 as a forerunner of the Niersbrücke racing clubs. In August 1893 the first racing events took place on the Nierswiesen.

The collapse of a visitor's grandstand in 1922 caused a sensation. The accident occurred during a racing event when the overcrowded wooden grandstand gave way to cheering visitors as they crossed the finish line.

After the Second World War , the trotting track was modernized and expanded, in 1969 it received the status of an A-track, and since 1972 the races have also been broadcast on the track's own TV system on site and externally.

In September 1993 the 100th anniversary of the track was celebrated with a week of festivities, and in the same year the world championship for professional trotting drivers took place in Mönchengladbach . An open day was held in 2003 for the 110th anniversary, and on the occasion of the 125th anniversary in 2018, a double race day took place at the racecourse on the Niersbrücke.

The course, laid out in its current form in 1984, was extensively renovated in spring 2019, with the previous sand surface being replaced by a striking, anthracite-colored surface made of basalt split.

In September 2019 it became known that the development company of the city of Mönchengladbach (EWMG) had terminated the lease for the trotting track for the end of December 2021 in favor of the airport expansion.
