Opened on Ascension Day 1891, it was the second such racetrack in the Kingdom of Saxony after the Scheibenholz racecourse in Leipzig . The park-like area of around 43 hectares today, which is also the largest sports facility in the city, is being used by the Dresdner Rennverein 1890 e. V. operated.
location
The racecourse is located in the Seidnitz district south of the original village center Altseidnitz in the direction of Dobritz and thus belongs to the statistical district Seidnitz / Dobritz (statistical district 561 Seidnitz (racecourse) ) in the urban district of Blasewitz .
The oval was built quasi-parallel to the northeast of the Dresden – Tetschen railway line , which at this point runs in a north-west-south-east direction. Dresden-Reick train station is around 500 meters southwest of the main entrance at Oskar-Röder- Strasse 1 . The street Winterbergstraße / An der Rennbahn runs along the opposite long straight , which as an extension of the main avenue of the Great Garden leads to Dobritz in the southeast.
history
In Dresden there were horse races as early as the 18th century as part of court festivities. Lord Henry Watkin Williams Wynn (1783-1856), British envoy in Saxony since 1803 , organized the first race in 1805 in the Great East Enclosure with Prince Biron of Curland . Later it was officers of the Saxon Army who campaigned for the promotion of equestrian sport. While this initiative initially on the resistance of the War Ministry came because one because of the betting was concerned about the morale of officers, found in 1851 on artillery - parade grounds of the army various horse racing repeated instead.
The Prussian Prime Lieutenant Walter von Treskow (1855–1923), son of the manor owner Hermann von Treskow , settled in Dresden in the early 1880s, lived on the income from his father's estates and had been a privateer with a wealthy heiress since his marriage (1884) . He devoted his extensive free time to equestrian sport and thus found an attractive area southeast of the royal seat of Dresden near the village of Seidnitz. In December 1890, the Dresdner Reiterheim Association was finally founded , and he became its first chairman. The association leased the land from eight farmers and had the racetrack built. Two years later, when the club was able to acquire what was then 33 hectares, it renamed itself the Dresdner Rennverein .
The facility was inaugurated on May 7, 1891 with six horse races; the inaugural flat race was won by the half-blood mare of the industrialist Hugo von Hoesch , who headed the club from 1907 to 1916. The first trotting race took place a year later on June 12, 1892. In the following years the area was expanded, including a club bar and a practice facility. After horse exhibitions had been held annually in Dresden since 1875, shortly after the slaughterhouse was built in the suburb of Leipzig , one of these took place for the first time in Seidnitz in 1894.
After the turn of the century (and the incorporation of Seidnitz to Dresden in 1902), the racetrack could be developed into one of the top addresses in German horse racing. As part of the expansion of the railway line , the Reick passenger stop was opened, and the Dresden tram received a track loop (which is no longer available today). The extension of Wiener Strasse coming from the main train station to the end of the Great Garden on this side to the racetrack , which was planned around 1910, was not implemented .
Also during the Second World War , when horses played an important role in the Wehrmacht , horse races took place on the horse racing track , the last on December 1, 1944. The track survived the war largely unscathed, but the office with the club archive on Prager Straße 6 was opened Lost as a result of the air raids on Dresden . Since it was no longer used as an air force airfield , horse races could already be held again in October 1945.
In 1946 the horse breeding and riding cooperative Dresden-Seidnitz took the place of the compulsorily dissolved racing club , which was converted into VE Rennbetrieb Dresden in 1953 . In the course of further restructuring in 1974, all horse racing tracks in the GDR were combined at VEB Vollblutrennbahnen Berlin-Hoppegarten , and the Seidnitzer Bahn has since been operating as VEB Vollblutrennbahnen Dresden .
After the reunification , the Dresdner Rennverein 1890 eV was founded on April 17, 1990 . V. , who sees himself as the successor to the association that was founded 100 years earlier. After initial reconstructions, the city of Dresden acquired the site from the Treuhandanstalt in 1993 . Two years later, a heritable building right contract for 50 years was signed between the city and the association . The club pavilion was renovated in 2000/2001 and renamed the Walter von Treskow pavilion in November 2003, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the death of the first club president. In 2010, a solar system was installed on a six-hectare field in the southeastern part of the inner field , which is also the first solar system on a horse racing track in Germany.
