The Galopprennbahn Halle (Saale) , also called Passendorfer Wiesen , is a horse racing track in Halle (Saale).
Location
The Halle horse racing track is located on the western bank of the Saale , in the floodplain. Until the construction of the dams and water regulation systems in Thuringia and the Harz Mountains in the 1950s , the area was often flooded. Floods still occur today as the racecourse is on the river side of the flood dams.
Race track and buildings
The listed racecourse has a 2400 meter long oval course with a main stand and ancillary facilities and was laid out in 1912/13 on the initiative of the Saxon-Thuringian Equestrian and Horse Breeding Association under the direction of the architect Gustav Wolff . The grandstand from 1913, an example of the elegant sports architecture of the late Art Nouveau, is a 52.5 m long and 17.5 m high reinforced concrete structure with currently around 800 seats and boxes. Because of the risk of flooding, the structure was erected on a massive pillar-like concrete substructure .
Events
Racing
The first day of racing on the new facility took place on July 27, 1913 with seven races and was also the day of the opening event. Racing was interrupted during the First World War and until 1919 and resumed in 1920. In 1921 a few more structures were built with a box and saddle stables, as well as new obstacles and moats, so that all kinds of hunting , hurdling and flat races could then take place.
There were no public races between 1942 and 1945 due to the war . The SMAD approved the first racing days again from September 1945. During the GDR era, racing consisted of up to 12 racing days a year. Today the races are organized by a private operating company that holds race days from spring to late autumn.
After a break of six years due to flood damage and a renovation, normal racing started again in autumn 2019.
Other Events
In addition to the racing, other events take place on the racetrack, such as the International Highland Games since 2004 , the Hallesche Oktoberfest since 2008, as well as summer cinemas and antique / collectors' markets.
