location

Location between the Mannheim motorway junction (under construction in 1968) and the marshalling yard

Hochstätt is one of the eastern districts of Mannheim in an agricultural area between the A 656 motorway (Mannheim– Heidelberg ) and the Mannheim marshalling yard . The residential development is located south of the Mannheim motorway junction, not far from the A 6 . The B 38a forms the western boundary of the district .

history

Hochstätt is one of the oldest populated places in the area. The name of the district is probably due to "high place" or "high bank". The first people lived here as early as the Stone Age and the Romans also settled on the Hochstätt. Since at that time the Neckar , which changed its course several times over the centuries, still flowed past the Hochstätt, it was a rich settlement due to the trade income. After the area had been completely uninhabited for two centuries, "Die Station" was built in 1876 on the railway line that ran past in the southern part of Hochstätt. In 1880 it had just 20 inhabitants. After 1900, however, more and more apartments were built for railway employees. In the 1960s, the district then grew rapidly through intensive 3-4 storey rental house developments, especially through the GBG .

Characteristic

Due to the surrounding, agriculturally used areas, the district remained relatively small and manageable. The traditional working-class district on the Hochstätt has a relatively young population compared to the city as a whole. Children live in 36% of households. The high proportion of residents with a migration background is also characteristic of Hochstätt . Here (as of 2016) people from 66 nations live together who shape social life in the district.

According to the social atlas of the city of Mannheim, Hochstätt is one of the unfavorable parts of the city in terms of social structure. In 2017, 31.5 percent of the population received minimum income benefits .

Culture and sport

In the far west of the district on the B 38a, bordering Neuhermsheim , is the SAP Arena . It is a multifunctional event hall and is used for sports and major events.

In football, Hochstätt is represented by FC Hochstätt Türkspor, which was founded in 1993 by Turkish migrants and whose first team plays in the district class .
