Luzenberg is a district in the north of Mannheim , which lies directly on an arm of the Old Rhine and is part of the Waldhof district .

history

Luzenberg is a first example of social housing in Germany. Here the French glassworks Saint Gobain acquired a large factory site and built a mirror manufacture from 1853 to 1855. Parallel to the factory, a residential area was created for around 400 workers and their relatives, the so-called " mirror colony " or "mirror settlement ". The necessary skilled workers were brought from France and lived as guest workers in the residential colony. The 19 workers' apartment blocks were built in a cost-effective and space-saving row construction, and houses for senior officials and the director's villa were also built. St. Gobain was followed by numerous other factories on the Luzenberg, such as the Drais bicycle works and the Carl Benz & Cie. Together they ensured that the largest closed industrial area in Mannheim was created.

The soccer legend Sepp Herberger , who later became national coach and soccer world champion from 1954, was also born in the mirror settlement in 1897. A memorial plaque still commemorates Luzenberg's most famous residents. In the 1960s, the settlement was almost completely demolished. After the last buildings threatened to deteriorate, the financing of a refurbishment of the objects could be achieved, which was completed in 2005.

The gasworks , which was in operation from 1900 to 1968 , was located in the south-western area of the district, bordering the Neckarstadt-West and Neckarstadt-Ost districts . Today - just outside the Luzenberg area - only the gas works settlement still exists. The buildings with red clinker facades were erected shortly after the First World War as workers' apartments in order to be able to react quickly in critical situations due to the proximity to the city's only gas source since 1911.

politics

Luzenberg is part of the Waldhof district . According to the main statute of the city of Mannheim, this has a district advisory council to which twelve citizens living there belong. They are to be heard on important matters that affect the municipality and advise the local administration and committees of the municipal council.

Culture

Luzenberg school with water tower

The building of the Luzenberg School is striking and impressive. In 1909 the second municipal water tower was built on this site. However, it was rebuilt as early as 1914 and the school building was built around it. While the Luzenberg water tower was still used as such at that time, it was decided in 1976 to shut it down and only use it as part of the school. Numerous students have been learning in a unique atmosphere for almost 100 years. There were water fountains on every floor of the school building, and the floor of the water tower is used as a lounge and cafeteria.

Economy and Infrastructure

The residential development takes up only a small part of the district. A large part of the area is occupied by parts of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim of Daimler AG , which operates an iron foundry, an engine plant for Daimler Trucks and a bodywork plant for EvoBus in Mannheim . The historically significant French glassworks from 1853 for Luzenberg is still present today as the work of the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain . In June 2020, however, the company announced that it would cease production in Mannheim by mid-2021 at the latest, as the location could no longer be operated economically due to a lack of demand for the glass produced there.

Bundesstraße 44 , which connects the city center with the north of Mannheim , runs through the district as the main artery . The western introduction of the Riedbahn runs along the B 44 , on which regional trains of the Rhein-Neckar transport association run today , as well as three ICE lines that connect southern Germany with Berlin , Hamburg , Cologne and Dortmund . To the public transport Luzenberg is by two tram lines and two city bus lines of the RNV connected that meet the so-called. "Luzenbergknoten".

District life

Luzenberg is a traditional workers 'settlement with lots of greenery and beautiful historic buildings, such as the doctors' villa on Luzenbergstrasse. The Spiegelpark not only invites the little ones to play, the memorial and the grotto are interesting for all age groups. In addition, many citizens are involved in the “Wir am Luzenberg” district association in order to create cross-national cooperation between young and old and to plan events together. The togetherness in the district can also be experienced at joint events with the Greek Orthodox community on the Luzenberg. The two-day Kerwe on Luzenberg is also very popular. It is celebrated in the Spiegelschlöss'l restaurant, the former canteen of the Spiegelfabrik, which is cult due to its football icons.
