Mannheim-Rheinau is a district of Mannheim and also forms the Rheinau district .
geography
Rheinau is located in the south of Mannheim, west of the A 6 motorway . The neighboring city districts are Neckarau , Seckenheim and Friedrichsfeld . In the south it borders Brühl-Rohrhof , which belongs to the Rhein-Neckar district .
The Rheinau district consists only of the Rheinau district. This in turn is divided into the statistical districts of Casterfeld-West, Mallau, Casterfeld-Mitte, Casterfeld-Ost, Rheinau-Mitte, Rheinau-Hafen, Rheinau-Ost, Pfingstberg and Rheinau-Süd.
history
Around 1750, the “ Chaussee nach Schwetzingen ” was built, which , coming from Mannheim Castle and Neckarau, led straight through the area of today's Rheinau district to Schwetzingen Castle , the summer residence of the Elector. In order to be able to change the carriage horses about halfway, a relay house was built near today's Karlsplatz . In 1817 Karl Freiherr von Drais drove his two-wheeled walking machine from downtown Mannheim to the relay house and back to test his invention. The bicycle evolved from this two-wheeler .
In 1774 Georg Freiherr von Stengel built the Stengelhof not far from the relay house.
In 1860 a brick factory was built and industrialization started. In 1870 the Rhine Valley Railway , which connected Karlsruhe and Mannheim, was built, and the Rheinau chemical factory , which established the name Rheinau , was located here. Houses for the workers were built around them.
In 1896, Hafenbaugesellschaft Rheinau GmbH began expanding the arm of the Old Rhine as the first port basin. A tower-like water level house was built there, which has been preserved to this day. In this way the ships on the Rhine could find out the water level in the port. The Rheinau port now comprises a total of four port basins. With the construction of the Rheinau harbor around 1900, the settlement also expanded rapidly. Until 1913 Rheinau was a suburb of Seckenheim, then it was incorporated into Mannheim. From 1920, Pfingstberg was originally built as a railway settlement. Rheinau-Süd was founded as an IG Farben settlement in the 1930s on the Brühl district (Rohrhof district). In 1944 it was incorporated into Mannheim. In the 1980s, it was heavily enlarged as planned with single-family houses.

Economy and Infrastructure
In Mannheim-Rheinau, RWE AG has been operating a large substation since the mid-1920s, which was built as part of the construction of the north-south line . Because of the favorable location of this substation (strong supply from nearby coal-fired power plants and central location in the network of RWE AG), testing of new elements for high-voltage systems was started on the area of this substation as early as the 1920s and Rheinau was chosen as the seat of the research association Research Association for electrical systems and electricity industry eV (FGH), which is dedicated to the further development of components of high voltage technology. The proximity to the BBC headquarters (today ABB) Germany with its large plant in Mannheim-Käfertal and a cable and wire plant in Mannheim-Neckarau were further reasons for this location. FGH has its own high-voltage test field west of the substation, but occasionally also sets up test setups at the Mannheim-Rheinau substation.
South of the Rhine Valley Railway is the Rheinau port , which is part of the Mannheim port .
Line 1 Schönau − Rheinau of the RNV runs through the district to the Rheinau train station in the south.
The four-lane federal highway 36 has three junctions in Rheinau.
District life
The Mannheim-Rheinau district includes over 60 clubs. Your umbrella organization, thus also the central civic association of the city district, is the "Non-Profit Association Mannheim-Rheinau" founded in 1957. The "Heimatverein Rheinau / Pfingstberg von 1982 eV", founded in 1982, researches and archives the history of the Rheinau and Pfingstberg districts. At the Rheinauer See with its swimming pool, fishing zones, diving area and water ski facility, there is something for every taste. In addition to the numerous associations, families will also find numerous educational and care options in Rheinau, such as 15 day-care centers and seven schools.
Attractions
The Pfingstberg district is known nationwide for its outstanding church buildings.
This applies above all to the Catholic Church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus on Herbststrasse, which was started in 1959 and completed in 1961 . The " Baedeker ", Germany's most renowned travel guide, named it one of the most beautiful churches in Germany in its volume on Mannheim; it was one of only four objects presented at a touring exhibition entitled “Modern German Church Buildings” organized by the Foreign Office in the USA.
Also striking is the vane fountain located on the market square in the heart of the settlement, which was designed by the citizens in 1992/1993 as part of the “Market Place Initiative Pfingstberg” and partly financed by themselves. The design comes from the well-known Mannheim artist Maritta Kaltenborn and refers to the development of the district as a railway workers' settlement: The foundation of the fountain is a three-meter-diameter basin made of Gertelbach granite, the edges of which have small indentations in the form of locomotive sheds. The centerpiece is a sculpture made of bronze, which symbolizes an impeller .
