building

The old slaughterhouse consists of a building complex, including several halls. It was originally located at Leipziger Strasse 8 to 12. Since 1995, when the entrance from Leipziger Strasse was named Gothaer Strasse, the buildings have their own house numbers along the newly named street.

The main building used today for concerts is a sandstone building, the roof of which is held by riveted iron girders. The windows are very high and have steel frames. The three-aisled building is divided into a large and a small hall, a narrow, long central foyer and several side rooms. The large hall has 2000 standing or 1010 seats, the small hall 900 standing or 492 seats.

history

Meat processing for the growing city of Dresden was concentrated in the Wilsdruffer Vorstadt district until the 19th century . In the local Gerbergasse along the Weißeritzmühlgraben , for example at the current location of the theater , were the so-called “Kuttelhöfe”, but their capacity was increasingly reaching its limits. Under the master builder Wehinger, the new planning of a complex consisting of several slaughterhouses, stables, halls and a central cattle market took place in the commercial area of the Leipzig train station .

The new buildings for the Dresden butchers' guild , begun in 1871, opened on January 2, 1873. They had their own power station to provide electricity. A restaurant existed from 1879, in 1895 a technical school opened to train butcher apprentices. However, since there was only a very limited space for expansion, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries there were considerations for a new slaughterhouse to be built elsewhere. The Dresden city planner Hans Erlwein put these plans into practice with his new slaughterhouse in the Great Ostragehege , today's Dresden Exhibition Center . Its commissioning led to the closure of the old slaughterhouse on March 31, 1907.

In the course of the 20th century, the area served various businesses, including a warehouse. The renovated building complex has been used as an exhibition and concert hall since 1998. The entertainment center is operated under the name Alter Schlachthof by the culture management company of electra founder Bernd Aust . Other buildings in the vicinity of the concert hall continue to serve other commercial purposes.
