List of the thickest fruit trees in Germany
The list of the thickest fruit trees in Germany names fruit trees whose trunk circumference according to the German Tree Archives exceeds a specified size. At a height of one meter, or measured at the point of the smallest circumference, the limit area for chestnuts ( Castanea ) is five meters , for apples ( Malus ), pears ( Pyrus ), cherries ( Prunus avium ) and walnuts ( Juglandaceae ) it is four meters. From this point onwards, the German Tree Archive classifies the respective fruit trees as nationally significant . Because of the nut fruit , chestnuts and walnuts are among the fruit trees. For each of the 42 fruit trees, the location, the federal state, the two sizes and the estimated age are given.
Explanation
- Location: Provides the location of the fruit tree.
- Country: Abbreviation and flag of the federal state in which the fruit tree is located.
- Trunk circumference (one meter high): states the trunk circumference of the fruit tree measured one meter above the ground and the year of the measurement. Fruit trees of this size have an increase in circumference of around one to two per year, in extreme cases up to three centimeters, depending on the site conditions, growth habit, climate, trunk shape and biographical facts.
- Circumference (waist): states the circumference of the trunk at the point of its smallest diameter (waist) and the year of measurement.
- Age (estimated): Gives the estimated age of the fruit tree. The age estimate is based on the size of the trunk, the location and the historical records.
- Comment: Gives a brief note on the growth habit of the trunk or the crown.
