Niedersonthofen is a village with about 900 inhabitants and a district of Waltenhofen in the Allgäu .

location

Niedersonthofen is located in a foothills of the Alps about 15 km south of Kempten in the Bavarian Alpine foothills . The municipality has a share on the west bank of the Niedersonthofener See .

The villages of Linsen , Stoffels , Rieggis, Märis, Hof and Gopprechts belong to the district of Niedersonthofen .

history

From 1243 to 1804, Niedersonthofen belonged to the imperial county of Königsegg-Rothenfels and was more oriented towards the royal seat of Immenstadt , in contrast to Waltenhofen, which belonged to the prince monastery of Kempten .

On January 1, 1976, it was incorporated as a district of Waltenhofen.

Catholic Church of St. Alexander and George

The late Gothic style Catholic Church of St. Alexander and George is located in the village . The baptismal font with the date 1475 has been preserved from the original Gothic furnishings. The choir with its late Gothic net ribs has a ceiling painting from the Baroque period (“The Heavenly Glory ”). On the right wall of the church there is a Gothic wall fresco , probably from the beginning of the 16th century, which shows "The Last Judgment ". The high altar was erected in 1694. Its crucifixion group was created in 1790 by Johann Richard Eberhard .

Niedersonthofen is located on the Niedersonthofener See and, together with the other towns on the lake, Waltenhofen, Martinszell and Memhölz, forms the "recreational area of ​​Niedersonthofener See". The lake was much larger in ancient times; Niedersonthofen Castle, which was only rediscovered in 1952, was therefore designed as a moated castle .

In the small village of Linsen, which belongs to Niedersonthofen, there is an abandoned castle ( Burgstall Linsen ). This was first mentioned in 1319. There is a memorial plaque on the still preserved castle hill.

Niedersonthofen waterfall

From Niedersonthofen you can walk in about 30 minutes along the Schrattenbach to the Niedersonthofener waterfall, where the stream plunges picturesquely over the Nagelfluhfelsen .

In Niedersonthofen there is an approximately 170 year old black walnut , with a circumference of about 4.80 m (2013), which belongs to the walnut family and is one of the thickest nut trees in Germany .
