Oswald Richard Arthur von Lattré (born January 31, 1833 in Berlin ; † April 4, 1908 there ) was a Prussian infantry general and director of the war academy .

Life

family

He was the son of Peter Louis von Lattré (1786–1861) and his wife Angelika, née L'Estocq (1803–1885). His father was a Prussian Rittmeister a. D. and real secret war council in the military cabinet . Lattré had married Sarah Maria von Kiderlen-Waechter (1853-1903) on May 26, 1874 in Stuttgart . She was the daughter of the secret court and domain councilor and court bank director in Stuttgart, Robert von Kiderlen. The marriage remained childless.

Military career

Lattré attended the French Gymnasium in Berlin and was then a cadet in Potsdam and Berlin . On April 26, 1851, he was transferred to the Guard Reserve Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant . From October 1, 1856, Lattre was sent to the General War School for three years for further training and was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on May 31, 1859 . This was followed by commands to the historical and topographical departments of the Great General Staff , which were interrupted by brief troop service. On March 17, 1863 Lattré was transferred to the Guard Fusilier Regiment while being promoted to captain and used as a company commander . He was then reassigned to the General Staff on March 17, 1866 and transferred to the General Staff of the General Headquarters on June 2, 1866 on the occasion of the war against Austria . Lattré took part in the Battle of Königgrätz and was assigned to the General Staff of the General Government of Bohemia on July 11, 1866 under General of the Infantry Eduard Vogel von Falckenstein . After the peace treaty he received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords, for his achievements and was transferred to the General Staff of the Guard Corps on October 10, 1866 . On February 16, 1867, he was transferred to the General Staff of the 1st Guard Division and his promotion to Major on September 25, 1867. As such, Lattre was commanded from April 17, 1869 to November 5, 1870 to the embassy in Florence .

After the beginning of the war against France , Lattré was ordered back to Germany and from November 6, 1870 was active in the general staff of the Württemberg field division under Lieutenant General Hugo von Obernitz . In this position Lattre took part in the siege of Paris and the fighting at Mont Mesly, Villiers and Champigny . On December 24, 1870 he was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After the preliminary peace at Versailles , Lattre was commanded to serve as a department head in the Württemberg War Ministry on March 24, 1871 .

On October 16, 1873, Lattré, now a lieutenant colonel , was appointed chief of the general staff of the 5th Army Corps in Poznan . This was followed by his appointment as commander of the 1st Hanoverian Infantry Regiment No. 74 on January 12, 1875 and his promotion to colonel on July 3, 1875 . As such, Lattré was from January 18, 1878 to April 11, 1881 commander of the Guard Fusilier Regiment and at the same time from July 20, 1878 also a member of the study commission of the War Academy. Subsequently, Lattré was promoted to major general commander of the cadet corps . With promotion to lieutenant general , he was finally appointed director of the War Academy on September 18, 1886. His achievements found expression in the award of the star to the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on rings, and the Order of the Crown, 1st class. On September 16, 1890 Lattré was awarded the character as General of Infantry with the statutory board for disposition made.

King Wilhelm II of Württemberg awarded Lattré the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick on December 5, 1895 .

After his death, Lattré was buried on April 8, 1908 in the French cemetery in Berlin.
