Hugo Moritz Anton Heinrich Freiherr von Obernitz (born April 16, 1819 in Bischofswerder ; † September 18, 1901 in Honnef ) was a Prussian infantry general and adjutant general of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

Life

Hugo was the son of the Prussian majors a. D. Friedrich Karl Moritz von Obernitz (1786–1844) and his wife Wilhelmine, née Austria (1879–1832).

After visiting the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin , Obernitz joined Infantry Regiment No. 4 as a second lieutenant on August 18, 1836 . In 1852 he became a captain and in 1856 a major. Since June 1861 lieutenant colonel and from spring 1863 commander of the Guard Fusilier Regiment . On June 6, 1865 appointed a member of the study commission of the War Academy in Berlin. During the German War he led the 1st Guard Infantry Brigade in the Association of the Second Army at Soor and Queen's Court against the Austrians. In the decisive battle near Königgrätz on July 3rd, his troops captured 40 cannons and the village of Chlum . For this, Obernitz was awarded the Order Pour le Mérite on September 17, 1866 and promoted to major general on September 29, 1866 . From 1868 to 1871 he was inspector of the hunters and riflemen .

As commander of the Württemberg field division in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 in the battles near Wörth and in the association of the II Army Corps under General von Eduard von Fransecky at the siege of Paris . Obernitz received a grant of 100,000 thalers for these services . On October 22, 1871, he became commander of the 14th division in Düsseldorf. On June 11, 1879 he was appointed commanding general of the XIV Army Corps in Karlsruhe , which he held until he was retired in August 1888. In the meantime, Obernitz was promoted to General of the Infantry on June 11, 1879 and appointed Chief of the Grenadier Regiment "King Frederick the Great" (3rd East Prussian) No. 4 on March 22, 1884 . On August 18, 1886, he celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company.

After his departure in 1888, he and his wife Anna Friederike Ida Bertha, née von Usedom (1839–1913) bought the villa in Bad Honnef, built by a Mr. Vißer from 1849 to 1851, which is now called "Villa Modersohn" on the site of the Rheinklinik stands. The gravestone of Hugo von Obernitz, from which the bronze Prussian eagle was stolen in 1988, can still be seen in the old cemetery of Bad Honnef. He had several children with his wife, including:
