Altengamme ( Low German : Olengamm / Oolgamm ) is a district of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . He belongs to the Vierlanden in the Bergedorf district .
geography
Altengamme is the easternmost district of the Hanseatic city and is located on the north bank of the Elbe .
It also includes the Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserve , which consists of the three sub-areas Altengammer Elbwiesen , Borghorster dunes and the large Borghorster Brack that was created by a dike breach .
history
Altengamme was first mentioned in a document in 1188. The name means old earth and is derived from the Indo-European word Gham or Ghama for earth. In 1420 Hamburg and Lübeck achieved joint rule over the village. Since 1556 it has been known as the Vierlande with Curslack , Kirchwerder and Neuengamme . After the end of the "two-city" rule, Altengamme belonged to the Hamburg rural area ( Landherrschaft Bergedorf ) since 1868 . In 1938, the Greater Hamburg Act resulted in complete incorporation into Hamburg.

Economy and Infrastructure
Altengamme is still dominated by agriculture, mainly flowers, fruit and vegetables are grown. In addition to farms, there are several shipping companies in the village. With the Altengamme stud there is an important breeding of trotting horses. There is also a nursery in Altengamme that has been growing plants for four generations. There used to be a large number of nurseries in the Vier- und Marschlanden, today the number is getting smaller.
The federal motorway 25 runs through the north of Altengammes . The next two connection points are outside Altengammes, in Curslack and in Geesthacht . Also outside Altengammes, but easily accessible, is the federal highway 404 in the direction of Lüneburg . The district no longer has a rail connection since 1953. The buses rarely run, usually only once an hour.
Altengamme has a primary school . The local sports club is SV Altengamme from 1928. One of the oldest volunteer fire departments in Hamburg - founded in 1878 - has its base in Altengamme. The "Sommerbad Altengamme" was built back in the 1930s. The artificially created basin is fed with groundwater from a 30 meter deep well. Visiting the summer pool is free.
Culture and sights
- The Evangelical Lutheran St. Nicolai Church dates back to the 13th century . The current design dates from the 17th century . The "Celsa" bell from 1487 originally hung in Hamburg's Mariendom and after it was demolished it was brought here in 1804.
- The oldest building still preserved in its original state is a wooden tower warehouse from 1562 on Horster Damm at No. 351.
- A Schiller memorial stone, which was erected in 1905 on the 100th anniversary of the death of the poet Friedrich Schiller on the Kirchenstegel street , has stood under a large oak tree in the school yard of the Altengammer Deich School since 2003.
- The Holstein Belt of Hamburg-Altengamme is a magnificent belt made of iron and bronze, which was found in an urn burial from the pre-Roman Iron Age in Altengamme in 1931 and can now be seen in the permanent exhibition of the Hamburg Archaeological Museum (formerly the Helms Museum) in Hamburg-Harburg .
