geography

Bismarck tower between Irxleben and Schnarsleben

Irxleben is located around ten kilometers west of Magdeburg , the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, near the Magdeburg motorway junction ( Federal Motorway 2 and Federal Motorway 14 ). The federal road 1 leads through the place. To the northeast, about 20 kilometers away, is the Magdeburg waterway intersection , where the Mittelland Canal crosses the Elbe .

Townscape

The district is characterized by the typical arches . The courtyard entrances have a gate with a round arch. To the right of the gate there is usually a door and above it there are usually stone tablets with various inscriptions.
Many of these historical farms are still preserved in Irxleben today, including the former farm of the “zu Irxleben” family in Kirchstrasse. Many half-timbered houses and the "Quetschengraben", which has been piped in the meantime and now exposed again , also contribute to the appearance of the town center . Newer buildings are also fitted into the historic townscape.

history

Irxleben was first mentioned in a document in 1015 in deeds of donation to the Bishop of Paderborn . The certificate attests to the exchange of all the noble Liuthard's possessions in Irxleben, Asterlindi and Hardego, including the serfs, for an ounce of gold, ten pounds of pennies and a coat worth four pounds.

Surname

During the Great Migration (4th to 6th century) the Germanic tribe "Warnen" immigrated and settled down. The occupied towns were named after the tribal elders. In the case of the place Irxleben this was "Irik", from which the name "Irikslevu" followed. In the following centuries the name of the place was changed frequently:

  • 1015: Irish learners
  • 1063: Erixleve
  • 1112: Aresleve
  • 1144: Erikesleve
  • 1201: Irekesleve
  • 1221: Irkesleve; Yrckleve
  • 1270: Erxleve
  • from 1564: Irxleben

Local development

The place had a large village church as early as the 12th century. Until 1418 the owner of the village was the "von Irxleben" family. During the Thirty Years' War , a large part of the population had to flee to the nearby heath , as Irxleben had been badly affected by the permanent siege of Magdeburg. Thereby houses in the village went up in flames and residents lost their lives. For a long time, Irxleben did not recover from the consequences of this war.

During the Wars of Liberation in 1813, Irxleben was also affected and 50 years later a memorial, the "Eagle", was erected to commemorate the victims. Due to the flourishing agriculture, primarily the cultivation of sugar beet and chicory, there was a sugar factory and a chicory kiln in the village around 1890 . At the turn of the century, three teachers were teaching 181 children in the school at that time. At that time, Irxleben was also the seat of the church school supervisory authority. Until the beginning of the First World War , the place was a typical farming village. A few large farmers lived here, but the majority were small and medium-sized farmers, as can still be seen today on the farms in the village. With the introduction of passenger transport through the post office , more residents found work in nearby Magdeburg . The Oberwiesenstrasse settlement was built between 1926 and 1933.

During the Second World War , the place had to take in evacuees, especially from the Rhineland . Displaced persons and prisoners of war had to work in the farms. In 1945 bombs fell on Irxleben, but they did not cause any casualties or major damage. The place was occupied by American troops and came to the Soviet occupation zone in July 1945 as part of the Potsdam Agreement .

After the land reform was completed, the first LPG was founded in Irxleben in 1953 . After reunification in 1989, the economic situation in town changed. A very large part of the population had jobs in the agricultural production cooperatives, which have now ceased to exist.

After the reunification, a large industrial area was created. Through the creation of new residential areas, the population grew steadily in the 1990s, and many families, especially from Magdeburg, moved to the state capital's “ bacon belt ”.

Local fires

In its history, Irxleben has often been ravaged by devastating fires. The pastor at that time Baucke wrote in 1780 in the church book, which had also been burned in the meantime : “Anno 1780 on March 31st in the evening after ten o'clock, fire came into the local Kossathen Mtsr. Conrad Behricke house, whereby six half-spännerhöfe as Erasmus Heinrichs, Joachim Kleinau, Peter Camin, Gottlieb Hilliger, Gottfreid Mohr and Simon Raecke and four Kossathenhöfe , as Jakob Willing, Joachim Schulzen, Riemann's Hof, the night watchman's house and two grandfather houses were completely laid to ashes . ”According to the report, the entire northern part of the village was destroyed in this fire. At that time, the building material was mostly made of straw , wood and clay and the distance between the houses was often insufficiently small, so that fires often affected large parts of the village. On February 14, 1798, fire broke out again in the Hilliger house, causing a total of seven farmsteads to burn. At the time, the rebuilt Hilliger Hof was one of the most beautiful properties in the area. A plaque still bears witness to this event today.

Population development

In 1564, 23 families lived in the parish. This number grew to 310 inhabitants by 1785 and grew to 1238 by 1892. In 1933 the number of inhabitants fell to 967, after the end of the Second World War it rose again to 1240 due to the influx of many refugees and evacuees. In the following years the population decreased again, by moving to the big cities on 883. After reunification, this development was reversed and many residents, especially Magdeburg, moved to the suburbs. Irxleben had 2537 inhabitants on November 1, 1999, and there are currently 2267 inhabitants in Irxleben (2008).

Due to the sudden increase in the population after 1990 and the resulting increase in tax revenue, various construction projects could be financed, e. B. the construction of a gym, a multifunctional sports area, a beach volleyball court and a new elementary school. Due to the wave of population, many new clubs could be founded (pigeon breeders club, poultry breeders club, hunting club and dog sports club). In the Irxleber Sportverein (SVI) new types of sport could develop ( badminton , basketball , handball , bowling , chess , table tennis and volleyball ). Irxleben developed very quickly financially and economically, especially in the industrial park.
Irxleben became the seat of the Hohe Börde administrative community , to which 13 other communities belonged. On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Irxleben, Ackendorf , Bebertal , Eichenbarleben , Groß Santersleben , Hermsdorf , Hohenwarsleben , Niederndodeleben , Nordgermersleben , Ochtmersleben , Schackensleben and Wellen merged to form the new community of Hohe Börde. The administration community Hohe Börde was dissolved.

Völkerschlachtdenkmal as the Irxleber "Adler" on the B1

The old Irxleber Church was built in the Romanesque style as early as the 12th century . It had a gable roof with a 20 meter high tower, on the top of which there was a weathercock with St. Eustachius . He is still the patron saint of the church today. Due to the strong increase in the number of inhabitants, the church was expanded in 1892/93 under Superintendent Heinrich-Julius Raabe and the spire was renewed. The transition from the old hull of the tower to the new spire is still clearly visible today. There are colored stained glass windows in the church.

In the church there is a baptismal font that is about as old as the church itself. It has a diameter of over one meter and a hemispherical, bowl-like depression. The old font has not been used since the Thirty Years War. Today a dark wooden font is used for baptism.

Völkerschlachtdenkmal

In 1813 the place suffered badly from the Wars of Liberation . The Völkerschlacht memorial was erected here for the 50th anniversary and still commemorates the victims of the wars. There is an eagle on top of the memorial column, which was removed after 1945 and replaced with a new one in 1999.

politics

A local constitution was introduced for the district of Irxleben. The local council of Irxleben consists of 9 members.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded on November 11, 1937 by the President of the Province of Saxony.

Blazon : "A black table tray in silver."

This coat of arms led the family von Irxleben, which died out in the 15th century. Century is attested in its home town Irxleben.

According to the legend, the ancestor of the family "Burchard the Black of Irxleben" was raised to the imperial knighthood after he had made a name for himself among Otto the Great's followers . In 962 the emperor honored many Saxon nobles in the cathedral in Rome and gave them coats of arms. Knight Burchard von Irxleben received the dignity of hereditary master chef of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation . In this capacity, he received the black tray in the silver field as a coat of arms. The lineage of the “von Irxleben” family has been extinct for almost 600 years. The last bearer of the name was Otto von Irxleben. He was a monastery bailiff and archbishop of the castle and died without a male heir on August 16, 1418 in nearby Wolmirstedt , where he was buried in the Katharinen church. The municipality still bears the coat of arms of the zu Irxleben family today.

The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg State Archives Councilor Otto Korn .

Craft and trade

During the period around 1900, the community had numerous handicraft businesses and factories. So there were, among many others, two chicory fools, a sugar factory, five cobblers, three butchers, four inns and two bakers in the village. Around 1930 there was even a cinema. The sugar factory was blown up in 1928.

The Irxleber economy experienced a great boom through the establishment of an industrial park after reunification with more than 60 building plots. The favorable traffic situation of the place with direct connection to the A 2 and the B 1 as well as the proximity of the state capital Magdeburg and the A 14 offers a big advantage for the commercial location.
