The Irxleben war memorial is a listed war memorial in the municipality of Hohe Börde in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the center of the street in the Irxleben district on the north side of Helmstedter Straße, which is part of Bundesstraße 1 . To the south of the memorial there is a roundabout on which, in addition to Helmstedter Strasse, the streets Morgenstrasse, Stadtweg, Niederndodelebener Strasse and Gang join.

Architecture and history

The monument was erected in 1863 and inaugurated on March 17, 1863. It commemorates those who died in the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon in 1813 . The occasion of the erection was the 50th anniversary of Prussia's entry into the war against France on March 17, 1813. A sandstone stele was erected on a pedestal . The top of the stele is crowned with an eagle. The pedestal bears the inscription:

In memory of March 17, 1813,
Irxleben erected March 17, 1863

The stele is surrounded by four stone posts. Two steps lead from the crossroads to the monument area.

In 1945 the eagle was removed and probably later replaced by a bowl. In addition, the stele probably received in the time of the GDR on its front a black plaque with the inscription For the peace of the world, we are all on guard . In 1999, the stele was again crowned with an eagle. The inscription plaque was also removed again.

The war memorial is entered in the local monument register under registration number 094 75164 as an architectural monument.
