Emmanuelle Arsan (1967)

Emmanuelle Arsan (* 1932 in Bangkok ; actually Marayat Rollet-Andriane , née Bibidh ; † June 2005) was a French writer of Thai origin who became known worldwide as the author of the Emmanuelle novels and the films based on these novels. After her death, her authorship was questioned; in truth, her husband, the diplomat Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane, is said to have been the author.

Life

She was born as Marayat Bibidh in Bangkok. At the age of 16 (according to other sources 20) she married the French UNESCO diplomat Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane.

The first two novels of the Emmanuelle series were published in 1959 and 1960 by Eric Losfeld in Paris . The novels were a great success, although they could not be advertised due to the censorship regulations. In 1967 and 1968 there was an official new edition, which was followed by other volumes in the series and other books by the author. The Emmanuelle films made from the 1970s onwards made the author well known.

As Marayat Andriane , she played a supporting role in the film Gunboat on the Yangtze River (OT: The Sand Pebbles , 1966, with Steve McQueen ). In 1967 she was also featured in an episode of the western television series Big Valley . In 1975 she directed the film adaptation of her own novel Laura (OT: Laure ) and also starred herself.

Questionable authorship

The producer of the film Laura , Ovidio G. Assonitis , claimed in 2007 that the books and film scripts were not written by Marayat Rollet-Andriane, but by her husband Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane ; he also directed Laure . Originally he published the books that were shocking at the time under a pseudonym so as not to endanger his diplomatic career, and later his wife took on the role of Emmanuelle Arsan. Assonitis describes Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane as "very intellectual", but also as a "very strange guy"; he is a "sexual manic , but more in a spiritual than in a practical sense."
