Emmanuelle is the fictional title heroine of a very successful erotic book and later film series by Emmanuelle Arsan . The variants Emanuela , Emanuelle , Emmanuele , Emanuele and Emmannuelle are also used in translations, plagiarism and parodies .

The books

A total of four "Emmanuelle" novels were published under the pseudonym Emmanuelle Arsan , the first in 1959 in Paris by Édition Clandestine. The protagonist's experiences are predominantly portrayed from the personal narrative situation , although the identical first name suggests a congruence between the author and the protagonist, but does not specify it. Each chapter (at least in the first book ) is preceded by a quote from a famous poet or philosopher (e.g. Ovid , Nietzsche ). In addition to the descriptions of numerous sexual acts and erotic constellations, a special philosophy of eroticism is propagated, a sexual utopia that above all claims a more liberal and radically different way of dealing with one another between the sexes. Jealousy, monogamy , sexual taboos and asceticism are interpreted as loneliness and a lack of the ability to love.

Emmanuelle gets to know the redeeming power of eros in the arms of numerous partners of both sexes . This power leads them to the absolute freedom to determine their own senses and taboos alone and without regard to conventions. In addition, she freely shares her knowledge with her loved ones and her readers.

Her "Philosophy of Lust" as a consequent hedonism mainly translated into sexual terms is reminiscent of the thoughts of Georges Bataille ("The Holy Eros"), but has a much more positive, cheerful and optimistic effect, as a French writer once remarked:

Emmanuelle was an underground bestseller for years and has already been translated into ten languages. First copies of the then unpublished first novel are said to have been in circulation in France as early as the late 1950s. In Germany the books are published again and again; the latest edition was published by Rowohlt around the turn of the millennium and is out of print again.

The movies

The first Emmanuelle film Io, Emmanuelle with Erika Blanc in the title role was released in Italy in 1969 ; it was not a commercial success. In 1974 Emmanuelle (German distribution title: Emanuela) followed with the Dutchwoman Sylvia Kristel in the title role. The film, directed by Just Jaeckin, was hugely successful both in France and internationally. In Paris alone the film ran for over eight years and attracted more than 3 million viewers to the performances. This success set off an avalanche of Emmanuelle films, including numerous authorized sequels, but also plagiarism , such as the Italian Black Emanuelle series with Laura Gemser , as well as numerous other variants.

Even the official Emmanuelle film series had an impressive seven episodes between 1974 and 1993, five of which starred Sylvia Kristel . The unauthorized Black Emanuelle series was launched in Italy as early as 1975 (for legal reasons the name was spelled with just an "m"), in which the native Indonesian Laura Gemser - she was also in a supporting role in the second French Emmanuelle film - played the title role and mostly directed by Joe D'Amato .

In addition, the role u. a. still played by Mia Nygren , Monique Gabrielle and Natalie Uher .

For the early publications, the name Emanuela was used for German-speaking countries . Almost all of the uncut versions of this erotic film series were indexed in Germany , but some of them ran uncensored in the 1990s, despite undisguised sexual intercourse on German private broadcasters. However, the films never left the protected zone of the soft-erotic.

On May 29, 2019, the last, seventh part of the original series was deleted from the index list. Thus, for the first time in Germany, all seven official parts of the film series are no longer indexed after the respective limitation period of 25 years since their indexing.

It is characteristic of the films that they are set in "exotic" countries, that - as in the novel - there is extensive philosophizing about love and that the numerous explicit scenes are "softcore", sometimes very unusual, filmed with great effort and as dreamlike Sequences are designed - mostly with soft background music. Emmanuelle herself has the character of a very young and innocent, but at the same time sensual, bisexual, self-determined and modern woman who lives with her husband in an open relationship, carefree and in considerable prosperity. Physical love in all its forms is presented as a natural extension of emotional love, although this attitude is also shared by third parties. Later films, however, increasingly deviated from this scheme.

In 1978, the English director Gerald Thomas shot a parody of the Emmanuelle films as another part of the successful Carry-on… film series . In order to avoid problems with copyright , it was decided to simply add another "n" to the name, so that the film is originally called Carry On Emmannuelle - and the German title Mach 'weiter, Emmanuelle .
