Sternsee

The Sternsee is a lake in the Neu Olvenstedt district of Magdeburg .

history

The origin of the lake goes back to a quarry originally located here . Quarries near Alt Olvenstedt are mentioned as early as 1477 in connection with the construction of the Magdeburg Cathedral . Grauwacke was still being mined in the quarries until the end of the 19th century .

After the quarry was closed, today's Sternsee, unlike most other quarries in the area, was not backfilled. The lake, which quickly became a popular swimming area, was formed by groundwater flowing in. In 1914, the Stern swimming club was founded in the Bördedorf Olvenstedt, which included the lake . A first bathhouse was also built.

After the end of the First World War , the first bath house was demolished and a two-story house with a sun terrace was built. There was also a non-swimmer pool, lanes with starting blocks and a clubhouse. A sandy beach was also raised. The water quality was assured because a neighboring nursery took water from the lake through a pumping station and so fresh groundwater constantly flowed in.

The bathers came mainly from Olvenstedt - there mainly from the outside areas of the village built in the 1930s - and from Magdeburg. Business people are said to have been represented above average. The long-established Olvenstedt residents preferred the bathing establishment located closer to the village in Bernsdorfs Bruch .

After the Second World War , the swimming club ceased to exist. The municipality of Olvenstedt took over the facility. The bathing establishment was also very popular in the 1950s and 1960s, but there was a lack of funds to maintain the facility. The official bathing operation was therefore stopped. The buildings and furnishings fell into disrepair.

Sternsee - prefabricated buildings in the background

In the 1980s, the new Magdeburg district of Neu Olvenstedt was built in the immediate vicinity of the lake, which is mainly characterized by prefabricated buildings and at times had more than 30,000 inhabitants. The lake, which is surrounded by steep banks, was now seen primarily as a source of danger and was therefore surrounded by a fence. The neglect, however, continued.

In the mid-1990s, the city of Magdeburg decided to design the lake area as a green area. The remains of the bathing establishment were demolished in 1995. A path was built on the bank of the lake and benches were set up.

Today the Sternsee is protected as a natural monument .

It is claimed that a Trabant and a tank from World War II are said to be in the lake. These rumors were also fueled by oil bubbles rising again and again in the 1990s.
