The Fürstenwall marks part of Magdeburg's historical defense system, which dates back to the Middle Ages . There was a city wall here as early as 1180 . In the period that followed, the weir systems were expanded. Several defense towers were built, of which the towers “Kiek in de Köken” and “Behind the exit of the Möllenvogtei” are still preserved. In 1525 , a wall parallel to the existing outer wall was built on the inside. A kennel was built as part of the fortifications. The Zwinger was filled in between 1700 and 1722 . Casemates were built between the walls on the orders of Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau . The surface was greened and used as a promenade. The resulting wall is still the Fürstenwall to this day. The designation "princes" refers to Prince Leopold von Anhalt Dessau, who ordered the layout and was fortress commander in Magdeburg from 1702 to 1747 . It rises up to 6 m above the surrounding area. In the second half of the 19th century, the Fürstenwall was broken through by the Gouvernementstrasse in order to create easier access from the city to the Elbe . During the Second World War, the northern part of the ramparts (north of Gouvernementstrasse) was badly destroyed by air raids and demolished between 1973 and 1975 .
