Bridge of peace

Bridge of Peace is the name given to two bridge structures that span the Old Elbe in Magdeburg as part of the northern bridge line and, among other things, cross Bundesstraße 1 .

The southern bridge was first put into operation in 1902. The current construction dates from 1997 and has two lanes for motor vehicle traffic to the east. In addition, a double-track tram route as well as a cycle path and sidewalks on both sides will be transferred. The northern bridge was built in 1996 as a prestressed concrete bridge for two lanes of motor vehicle traffic to the west as well as two sidewalks and a cycle lane.

Southern Bridge of Peace

Herrenkrug Bridge 1902

The rapidly growing traffic over the river bridge led to the construction of two more Elbe crossings in Magdeburg at the beginning of the 20th century, after several variant investigations. These were the south bridge and the north bridge train, consisting of the north bridge over the Stromelbe and the Herrenkrug bridge over the old Elbe .

Construction work began on April 15, 1901. Due to insufficient financial means, the bridge was built in wood and 28 m upstream, outside the axis of the north bridge, in order to be able to build a final bridge later without hindering traffic. From July 15, 1902, the building could be used by pedestrians. It had an 8 m wide carriageway and 2 m wide sidewalks on both sides. The total of around 217 m long wooden bridge construction had 11 openings 16.5 m in length in the middle and an edge opening of 15.62 m in length on each side. The construction costs for the building amounted to 240 thousand marks.

Bridge of the Magdeburg Pioneers 1934

It was not until 1933 that a massive bridge was finally built. The steel girder bridge had seven spans with spans of up to 38 m. On December 1, 1934, the building was inaugurated as a bridge for the Magdeburg pioneers. On April 18, 1945, German troops blew up the bridge, and it was rebuilt between 1947 and 1950. On December 19, 1950, the building was opened to traffic as the Bridge of Peace.

Bridge of Peace 1998

After the completion of the new, northern bridge structure, the bridge underwent a general overhaul from November 1996 to June 1998. The entire superstructure was replaced after a blast. In addition, the load-bearing capacity of the six concrete pillar foundations has been reinforced to accommodate increased traffic loads. The bridge now only carries road traffic in the direction of Herrenkrug and the trams of line 5 in both directions.

The overall 23.7 m wide superstructure consists of a steel composite structure with the continuous beam as a structural system in the longitudinal direction. It is divided into two parts by a longitudinal joint. The downstream part has five longitudinal beams at a distance of 2.0 m and crosses the tram route and a sidewalk. The other half, with the two-lane, 7.0 m wide carriageway and a 4.5 m wide footpath and cycle path, is supported by six longitudinal girders that are spaced 2.0 m apart.

Northern Bridge of Peace

Due to the strong increase in road traffic, the construction of another bridge over the Old Elbe for western traffic began in 1994, 40 m downstream. The bridge was opened to traffic in autumn 1996 with a 6.5 m wide carriageway for two lanes and a 4.5 m wide sidewalk and bike path as well as a 1.75 m sidewalk. The sculpture “Daphne” by the Dutch artist Auke de Vries has stood on the east side of the northern Friedensbrücke since June 1st, 2001 .

The four bridge piers are noticeably designed due to their asymmetry. They are not in line with those of the southern bridge.

construction

The bridge has the continuous beam as a structural system in the longitudinal direction . The span for the five-span road overpass is 34 m for the two end spans, 49.0 m for the first inner spans on both sides and 64.0 m for the central opening, which results in a total span of 230 m. In the transverse direction, the 13.25 m wide superstructure is designed as a single-cell hollow box cross-section with a haunched construction height. The construction height is 2.4 m in the center of the stream opening and the peripheral areas, and 3.9 m above the two inner pillars. The prestressing consists of internal tendons in the longitudinal and transverse directions . The central opening was cantilevered , the remaining bridge fields were concreted in sections with a falsework .
