technology
The bridge, inaugurated in 1965, spans the Elbe at river kilometers 326.53. It is 30 meters wide and has a total span of (81.5 meters + 130.0 meters + 46 meters =) 257.5 meters, which spans the 120-meter-wide Elbe without supporting pillars in the course of the river. The structure is used for car, tram and pedestrian traffic and has six lanes, two of which are reserved for tram traffic.
history
The first written mention of a bridge in this area dates back to 1275. However, this bridge collapsed during a procession in the winter of 1275. 300 people died.
In 1450 a stone bridge was completed. In the course of the destruction of Magdeburg in the Thirty Years War in 1631, the bridges over the arms of the Elbe were also damaged. The short bridge over today's Stromelbe was repaired again from July 1632. The bridges that lead over today's Old Elbe were initially destroyed and were gradually renewed until 1666. Ship bridges served as a makeshift . In the years 1861 and 1862 a new bridge was built, which was inaugurated on November 4, 1862. This spanned the Elbe in a direct extension of Johannisbergstrasse . On October 13, 1913, a shipwreck occurred on the bridge.
In 1936 plans were made for the construction of a new river bridge. This should be built as an arch bridge a little south of the previous bridge. Before the start of the Second World War , the abutments were built, but further work was discontinued due to the war. On April 16, 1945, shortly before the end of the war, the current bridge was destroyed by the Wehrmacht , which was retreating to the east . The advance of US troops across the Elbe to the east was to be prevented.
After the end of the war, a temporary bridge was built, over which trams have been running again since April 29, 1946.
The current bridge, built without arches, was inaugurated on October 6, 1965.
