The Sternbrücke over the Elbe in the southern part of Magdeburg at river kilometer 325.10 connects the old town with the Elbe island Rotehorn and the Rotehornpark located there .

history

Old star bridge

Between 1886 and 1899 the first considerations were made about the construction of an Elbe crossing at this point. In the years 1912 to 1914 a planning concept was drawn up and discussed. The construction work was then put out to tender. Construction began in May 1914. After 1915, however, cracks were found on the bank pillars. Until 1919, a lawsuit against the construction company, the preparation of expert opinions and proposed solutions, a new tender and the award of contracts dragged on. The contract was again awarded to the same construction company.

The inauguration took place on June 14, 1922 by the Mayor of Magdeburg, Hermann Beims . The bridge superstructure of the river bridge consisted of a steel arch over the Elbe. This was followed by a concrete vault with a 25 meter span on the left and three flood openings on the right with a 22 meter span.

The chosen name Sternbrücke goes back to the Sternschanze fortress originally located on the western bank of the Elbe . In March 1925 the bridge was renamed Friedrich Ebert Bridge and in May 1933 Adolf Hitler Bridge .

A few weeks before the end of World War II in Europe, units of the Wehrmacht blew up the bridge on April 12, 1945 in order to prevent the US Army from advancing to the eastern side of the Elbe.

New star bridge

Since 1991 there have been considerations to rebuild the bridge, the ruins and remains of which are still there. Planning and tendering were carried out by 2002. The flood of the century the same shall then have damaged the existing for 57 years as radicals, a blast-defying and originally declared for re-used sheets of approach bridge from 18 August of 2002.

Construction began on September 11, 2002. The construction of the bridge was made more difficult by another Elbe flood in summer 2004 and by artesian springs in the area of the bridge foundations. The Einschwimmen the steel construction was carried out on October 26 of 2004.

On May 1, 2005, the inauguration took place in front of 100,000 people in the presence of Mayor Lutz Trümper , the building officer of the city of Magdeburg Werner Kaleschky and the building minister of Saxony-Anhalt Karl-Heinz Dehre . Only a few hours after opening, the bridge was temporarily closed due to excessive natural vibrations.

construction

The new 18.7 million euro bridge has a length of 242.2 meters between the end supports (old bridge: 272 meters), a width of 15.25 meters (old: 20 meters) and a height of 20 meters (old 20 Meter). The total weight of the steel structure is around 900 tons. The new bridge gives shipping a 1.1 meter higher headroom. In contrast to the old bridge, today the building system does not have a pure arch in the longitudinal direction of the bridge, spanning 128 meters, with massive abutments to absorb the horizontal thrust, but is designed as an anchored arch bridge ( tied arch bridge ) with a span of 137 meters.

The old Sternbrücke had four lanes and the tram could run over it. The new bridge is much narrower. It is only used for bicycle and pedestrian traffic as well as local public transport (buses and taxis). It is blocked for other vehicles.
