Auke de Vries (born October 27, 1937 in Burgum , Friesland) is a Dutch sculptor and graphic artist .

life and work

Auke de Vries began his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague . At the beginning he worked as a painter and graphic artist. He has been making metal sculptures since the 1970s. His sculptures are airy, abstract constructions made of geometric shapes such as lines, cones, cubes, cylinders and surfaces that he seems to make to float. With his sculptures for public spaces and with his art in buildings, he reacts to the architecture that he finds.

From 1972 to 1986 he taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, and from 1986 to 1996 at the Reich Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam .

In 1997 he received the Ouborgprijs , named after the painter Piet Ouborg , and in 2005 the Culture Prize of the City of The Hague.

De Vries lives and works in The Hague.
