Formerly: Lederstraße (until 1750)
The current name "Leiterstrasse" is probably based on a misunderstanding. In Low German , "Ledder" means ladder and "dat ledder" means leather. After 1750 the wrong "translation" of the name prevailed as a street name and has been preserved until today. As one of the few streets in Magdeburg's inner city, Leiterstrasse remained largely undamaged during World War II. Nevertheless, in the 1970s and 1980s, the old building was demolished and by a 1977 newly built until 1989 pedestrian zone with DDR - prefabricated replaced.

In 2003, at the insistence of the CDU parliamentary group, there were plans to name the square in the eastern part of Leiterstrasse after Charles de Gaulle . However, the proposal met with strong criticism and was not implemented. Later it was named after de Gaulle elsewhere.

This square at the intersection of Lessingstrasse, Arndtstrasse and Wilhelm-Külz-Strasse was unnamed for more than 100 years, although the character of a square actually existed. In 2005, the parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen requested that the square be named after Heinrich Böll . There was resistance to this, as the square was popularly referred to as Lessingplatz based on Lessingstrasse. The Alliance Greens withdrew their application. Instead, it received the name Lessingplatz after the German writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing at the request of the Citizens for Magdeburg / Animal Welfare Party by a city council resolution on July 11, 2005 .

In the southern area, today's Ernst-Reuter-Allee was created as a new west-east crossing of the city center. A block of flats was built in the northern section.
The street was named after the Löde family who lived here in the 17th century . Before that, the council family Lose , later Lohse, had written their court in the same place from the 13th century until 1562 . The old names were based on the name of this family. Around 1700, the name Lödischer Hof became established .
