Jean Burger (born February 16, 1907 in Metz , † April 4, 1945 in Dora concentration camp ) was a French communist and resistance fighter .

Life

Burger joined the French Communist Party before the Second World War .

During the war he was taken prisoner by Germany. In 1941 he managed to escape from the Nienhagen prisoner-of-war camp on the Baltic Sea . He returned to France and took part in the French resistance against the German occupation. He was arrested again in September 1942. However, he managed to escape again in December 1942. He built a resistance group of up to 3,000 members. The group carried out propaganda , distributed newspapers and leaflets, committed sabotage and helped escaped prisoners of war.

He was arrested again on December 21, 1943 and interned in the “Feste Goeben” special camp in Metz until it was dissolved in August 1944 . As a result, he was imprisoned in succession in the concentration camps of Dachau , Auschwitz and Buchenwald . He died on April 4, 1945 in the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp near Nordhausen .

Honors

In memory of Jean Burger, several streets and buildings in the Moselle department are named after him, the street to Fort de Queuleu (Feste Goeben) in the Plantières Queuleu district of the city of Metz Allée Jean-Burger , in Algrange a primary school bears his name and it As in Fontoy and a few other places, there is a Rue Jean Burger .

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor as Jean-Burger-Straße . A memorial stone was erected in the neighboring Lennéstrasse .
